Does Death Grips Suck?
Quick answer: No.
Long answer: Depends on who you are. I've known tons of people (mostly chicks) who are pretty much repulsed by Death Grips. I always ask what they don't like about them and usually the answer I get is "It's too loud", "It's not even rap", "lyrics are scary" etc etc. I won't generalize though, some girls I've met love the DG. I guess it takes a special kind of person who can enjoy Death Grips on a higher level. We can look past the memes and weird fans and see them as this decades finest band who've also somewhat reached mainstream appeal. Believe it or not, The Powers That B reached #72 on the Billboard charts. Ride's insane lyrical couplets, harsh hardcore guttural screams, Flatlanders ecstasy riddled neo-futurists beats, Zach Hills synthetic processed drumming might come off a little strange to some, but they've somehow managed to control the airwaves based on their own DIY culture they cultivated for themselves. Death Grips doesn't come off to me as a band who will last forever, maybe another album tops. The impact they've slaughtered across their respective landscape is unshakable though. So no. Death Grips does not suck. You suck if you think Death Grips sucks. |
They feel a tad forced.

They are a genius group as far as I'm concerned. Wildly experimental, capable of making anything from a catchy banger to a ridiculously abstract masterpiece. Absolutely astonishing discography, even if it's a tad inconsistent.
Arguably the best entity in music since their inception. |
They're uncompromising and might be the most accurate reflection of the 2010s in music. The Beatnigs and B L A C K I E are the most comparable groups to them as far as I can tell, but I can't think of anyone who matches their sound on more than a surface level. They have a particularly unique brand of chaos.
I think that their sense of vision has wavered between outlandishly confident and trying to move forward and find new footing throughout their whole career. Yes they suck but they're all the better for it. I think that they'll be viewed pretty positively in the future, but I'm interested in seeing how their acclaim evolves over time because they rode 1,005 hype trains so far and I can only imagine that there'll be more. |
It's ugly.

My vote on their smell is in no way a reflection of my opinion on their music.
I just don't imagine MC Ride smells good at all. |
