I’d be surprised if anyone said they hated ambient music, because it’s not really trying to do what other genres are trying to do. Ambient music is about creating an atmosphere or a mood. If you dislike ambient music you dislike film scores, which I doubt anyone here does. You may not actively listen to it on its own, but everyone can appreciate ambient music in its proper uses

I think the genre can stand to evolve beyond synthesizers (it already has, obvs, they're just the most prominent). Also, it sounds a bit oxymoronic, but I think percussion is very underexplored in the genre. 3 suck.

Yeah, I think that will be most people's problem with it, that it's boring. And it can be. Sometimes it depends on your mood, sometimes it's just someone who doesn't realise they have to do more than put chords together with some wind effects and maybe speech loops to make it interesting, but there's a whole hell of a lot of really decent, and some excellent, music out there. I would imagine a large percentage of people, if they listen to it at all, listen to ambient music as background music, which is why often a lot of the really cool stuff might pass them by.
