What Sucks About This Genre: Synthpop Edition

A genre I used to hate because it "wasn't rock" and "synthesisers aren't real instruments". Listening to quite a lot of it now, as it happens. |
I like this genre.

I'm not entirely sure about how much of my music falls under this genre, but some of it must be synth pop. At least Depeche Mode are for sure.
I guess some of the bands go for that cold and sterile feel to the point of them just being kind of lacking in energy, but I don't really have any beef with the genre. Need to listen to more, probably. And Depeche Mode are awesome. Low suckage. |
One of the saddest developments in music is the steep decline in quality Chvrches’ music has taken
From a 9/10 debut to a 6/10 follow up to a 3/10 third effort |

I'm sure theirs some synth pop in my repertoire, but nothing comes to mind.
Pass on this one it really, really sucks. |

Their 2018 album on the other hand might be the biggest stinker of the year that I’ve heard, utterly terrible outside of a track or two |

My number one album of 2016 was a straight up synth pop record, so when its good its reallllly good.

Yeah, I find I'm becoming more and more a fan of synthpop. I'm not totally into that cold, sterile stuff MicShaz mentioned - is it coldwave? Darkwave? Some bloody thing anyway, kind of like what Gary Numan does, but most of the rest of it is fine. Catchy stuff, and those guys can really play the keys. This would suck pretty low on the scale for me, too.

The **** is wrong with cold wave? That's the coolest ****.

And now you know why it's easier to just ****ing straight out say what you're talking about.
Thanks, though, I'll check it out. |
I also like some Pet Shop Boys and OMD.

Synth pop is pretty foundational for me since I grew up liking stuff like the Art of Noise, Depeche Mode, Devo, and all those 80s synthpop one or two hit wonders. Likewise I loved the whole early 00s electroclash thing and a lot of the people keeping synthpop alive since. If there’s one criticism I have of the genre, it’s probably the fact that the artists seem to have trouble sustaining the quality for the length of an entire album and are better enjoyed on a song by song basis.
