Again, I'm not in any way familiar enough with country music to make judgements, but I've found a lot I liked (and a lot I was surprised I liked). What really sucks though is the modern notion held among some bands or artists that all you have to do to be a country singer is wear a cowboy hat and hire some guy to play pedal steel. Bro Country! Ugh! And most of Country Pop/Pop Country really turns me off. I like the older, more traditional styles. Bluegrass is the ****, and a fiddle and a banjo just light up any country song. But it is one of the few genres that is, and should really remain, exclusively American, so when other countries try it it can be bloody awful. Never, EVER, under ANY circumstances listen to Irish Country! You have been warned.
Oh yeah, the God Squad mentality in most of it sucks, too. God ain't real, people. Stop writing songs about him/praising him/thanking him/blaming him.

The worst thing about country is how musically conservative it is. Artists who take risks or push the envelope are very rare and it has lead to a serious problem of creative stagnation.

Mic, if you like really old music you can also check out Jimmie Rodgers (the original, not the one who recorded Honeycomb) and the Carter Family (yes, June Carter's relatives). You'll find country is actually quite diverse.

Jesus Christ! You poor guy! Come away now, it's too late for them. No, no - you can't help them now. Big Tom has them. Sssshhh .... it's better this way.

I voted 3, although there is some country music in my spotify search history. I can listen to a select couple of songs by a given artist (pre 2000). Songs like This Cowboy Hat by Chris Ledoux, Should Have Been a Cowboy by Toby Keith, and some stuff by Brooks and Dunn come to mind. Mostly, it's a bit of nostalgia from having grown up in Idaho in the early 90 's (and I tend to only play country music if I've been drinking alone, lol). Overall, the genre really doesn't do anything for me.

God bless you and Lee Ann Womack always!!! Holly P.S. To me, the religious material is what makes the format as special as it is. The singers don't hesitate to salute the savior. |

I'm going on 20+ year memory here but the discussion was basically how religion and rock were separate parts of their lives. Scott Ian recalled playing stadiums in Germany where Hitler spoke. It was a very informative show. Religion and music can easily coexist in the world of country music. Since on topic of religion, my favorite religious rock song is Liar by Queen. The character in the song battles Satan 'the liar', goes to Hell and comes back again, he beat the liar. Back to country music. I do not like entire genre but I'm a fan of the outlaw singers from the '70's plus a few other random artists. I've seen Willie, Waylon, David Allen Coe, Alan Jackson plus some lesser acts. I always have a good time. |
