I feel like classical is a genre that rewards close listening particularly much, but some of the older stuff doesn't grab me. This is a generalization, but when we move further back than the romantic era, I'm less interested in a lot of the music written there.
Like I said elsewhere, I tend to find the pieces written with a religious function to generally be more moving when it comes to pre-romantic era classical.

In fact, their ire is mostly directed towards modern classical: especially Schoenberg and anyone who makes use of the musical techniques he pioneered. Indeed, with these composers (Berg/Webern/Stockhausen/Boulez etc) I've seen it suggested so many times that people don't actually like them, but pretend to or at least have just convinced themselves they do.

Of course, overall I'm exaggerating a bit (but not that much): it's very rare for someone to literally not think anything good has been written in that time (although I've met at least five people who think/like to express that good music ended with Brahms, and way more who complain that there hasn't been any great composers/musical creators since Shostakovich died (in 1975)).
