I don't know what defines "space rock", but I'm pretty sure I've seen Hawkwind get stuff into that category.

Rock that sounds like you're in space.

No, crossover prog is exactly what it says: music from another genre that occasionally crosses over into prog territory. Like I said, many progheads will indeed sneer at such bands but that doesn't make them not prog. And as for "someone said so", well it's a forum: everyone will have their say, the same as here. That's hardly a definitive answer. If someone googled your post where you say ELO is not prog, they miss mine where I elaborate on that. You can't take the opinion of one person as being authoritative.

Why can't a space rock band also be prog? Pink Floyd is obviously a psychedelic band but they're known as a prog band in some circles as well.

Not that I really care. All I really care about is Hawkwind is a damn good band. Labels don't really matter.

I view psychedelic music (the umbrella that space rock hangs out under) as totally different from prog rock even though many psychedelic bands are progressive.

I don't consider Floyd to be prog either btw.

You would obviously be in a spaceship if you were in space

Not if you'd been blown out the airlock.
