I've noticed that you sure do listen to and talk about a lot of prog metal for someone who doesn't like prog

Do I listen to prog metal? I hate Dream Theater and can't remember many other prog metal bands off the top of my head.

But I don't know, maybe there are bands that I like that fit a wider definition that what I'm thinking of. I don't really know.

**** it, so you don't like prog. Move on. Wasn't this supposed to be a thread where you tried several genres? And you're gonna give up after stubbing your toe with prog?? Maybe it's not for you. As one horseman of the apocalypse said to the other horseman of the apocalypse, it's not the end of the world.

isn't Waltari like your favorite band. And Madder Mortem, and Thy Catafalque (though I dunno if you're an active listener of them), and Nile, and Gorguts, and Ihsahn, and Dir en Grey,

I know, I know, but there's a strong feeling that this isn't really anything I want to do.
Writing about music was never really my thing anyway.
I keep trying, but I realize that

Of course I can still check out new music like I always do. It's just the blurting out my thoughts about the music dimension that has to go.

I guess those could be considered prog on some level. I tend to not worry about genre labels, but here's how I think about those bands:

Dir En Grey, Waltari, Madder Mortem: Blends genres, but still writes predominantly short, verse, chorus verse oriented songs. So I think of them as some kind of alternative metal.

Nile I guess I just think of as death metal. Maybe tech death. Gorod too, although they feel a bit metalcore-ish at times.

Gorguts and Thy Catafalque are bands I've had good experiences with but am not very familiar with (yet).

I have to agree with Frown on this. King Crimson is definitely the band you start off with if you want to get into prog. I love ELO, but I don't think that is the first band I'd identify with as a prog band.
