The album has an odd kind of atmosphere to it. I'd argue it's his least accessible album since Lodger. There's a kind of cold vibe to the album, which feels like a sharp shift after the several previous albums sounding rather warm and welcoming.

While I perhaps don't like this album quite as much as Heathen and Reality yet, it's definitely very good and still a 5/5. Hard for me to pick a favorite track, but they're all more than solid.

Now that we're all the way through, I looked back over my past ratings and it seems the 90's and onwards are my favorite time in Bowie's career - just by virtue of how many of my favorites are from that era.

My all time favorite David Bowie albums:
The Man Who Sold The World
Station to Station
Low
Heroes
Labyrinth OST
Black Tie White Noise
Buddha of Suburbia OST
1. Outside
Earthling
Heathen
Reality
The Next Day
Blackstar

After a lifetime of filler, Bowie closed out on masterpiece. Even if this wasn't brilliant on a musical level, the way that Bowie cemented his death with this album is a huge moment in music history.

Has anybody ever done something similar to this before? Closest I can think of is Dilla with Donuts.

Cohen's last one, although it's not that high quality.

Even I can't assail this one. This one really sets sail with being unassailable.

Sorry which do you like better? I REALLY like You Want it Darker. Like they seem equal to me.

Richard Strauss. Four Last Songs. Incidentally, this was one of Bowie's favourite works of music (in the Janowitz/Karajan recording): "I know of no other piece of music, nor any performance, which moves me quite like this."

Schubert's last three piano sonatas, especially D. 960.

Mozart's Requiem.

Blackstar > You Want It Darker
The latter is great, but Blackstar is a very special album for me and is not only a musical masterpiece but stirs up some singularly strong emotions.
