How he can say their FANS overrate them when he doesn't like them is beyond me. Maiden almost single-handedly brought metal to the attention of the mainstream with albums like The Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind, getting metal into the charts for the first time since I don't know when, and though they're a shadow of their former selves (which is understandable as they've been going since the 1980s) they deserve their place in music and metal history, and are without question NOT overrated. The amount of metal bands who cite them is proof enough of that.

Unfortunately, to our man Nathan it would seem "I don't like" = "overrated". Sad. Very very sad. And so very wrong.
You've got a point all I'm mentioning are bands that i don't like. Maybe I should just say "More bands that I don't like". Nah just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Iron maiden are just not my cup of tea. I'd rather ****ing listen to all of Sepultura's albums with Max Cavalera in them. The ones made after he left are ****.

Iron Maiden are considered one of the best metal bands of all time. The Number of the Beast is considered one of the best metal albums of all time. Two of their most popular songs are The Trooper and Run to the Hills. I never liked this band despite all of the praise and good reviews they got. Bruce Dickinson's voice is terrible and the riffs and guitar parts of their songs are crap.
I have massive Maiden nostalgia but they're no longer a go-to band for me. I just heard it all so many times and now I just don't listen to much melodic metal unless it's some kind of NWOBHM or sick USPM from the 80s.

Anthrax are a pretty overrated metal band.
I mean they weren't the best but they came correct on their first three albums at least. Among the Living is a minor beast ("I Am the Law" is great as a song and as a paean to Dredd), the debut is top shelf early 80s cornball speed metal, and Spreading the Disease is a desert island album tbh. It's just perfect 80s cheese with some top notch hooks and so much energy.

Iron Maiden's position in metal history is definitely fully secured, no way around that. Calling them overrated is just the wrong choice of words. One could do a thread like this and make it interesting, but one could also just do it like this...

Whomever, it was much needed work.

That's what you get for criticizing Iron Maiden. It was worth it.

I still like to listen to and look for melodic metal bands a lot, but I guess, now that I think about it, even most of those that I listen to these days have a good deal of aggressive aspects to them, with screams and busy drumming, etc.

It just feels like a lot of the most interesting modern metal bands are at least partially in the "extreme" camp, musically. Kinda makes me want to try actively and find some more more modern metal bands that only do melodic stuff.

Don't be too proud of that. You've neither managed to really stir any ****, nor say anything interesting. Can't you at least make it seem a bit more like you even understand the bands you're talking about? Like having something to actually say; other than just "band x sucks because they're really not that good and then they got poppy and worse and they're overrated." Rinse and repeat.

Maiden and Priest deserve tons of credit, if for nothing else, helping rock and metal fans get through the punk and disco eras.
