I think Peter Frampton's "Comes Alive" era band qualifies. Dude wrote a few decent pop tunes (after a stellar guitar stint in Humble Pie), and backed them with a generic vanilla band that went so low as to use electric piano............ :finger:

The album was compiled from 4 different shows and most of the crowd response was embellished, and tacked on after the fact. (see: Alive by Kiss)

More ****ty and overrated bands

Hole are a crappy overrated band. Just because Courtney Love married kurt Cobain suddenly people started to give a **** about her lousy band. The reviews on their 1994 album Live Through This sum that up pretty well. Courtney Love rode the wave of fame that she was lucky enough to get. She milked every drop of fame that was left from being associated with Kurt Cobain well after he died. The fact that she became an A list actor in the mid to late 90's sums up the ridiculousness of the time period. Would that ever happen again these days..... **** no. With ****ty hits like Malibu and Celebrity Skin Hole managed to achieve modest success but by the end of the 90's just like with Courtney Love's acting career faded away. The albums that are considered Hole's best work are even rumored to not be written by them. It's rumored that Kurt Cobain wrote the material for Live Through This and Love even admitted that Billy Corgan wrote Celebrity Skin. Other factors in Hole sucking are Courtney Love's ****ty vocals. She sounds like ****en Nelson Munts.

Kings of leon. Kings of leon started in 1999. They became really famous and successfull in 2008 with the album Only by the Night and the hits Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. I remember actually liking Sex on Fire but getting sick of it really quickly. Then after that Use Somebody came out. I didn't like that song much. They overplayed that ****en song so much on the radio and on tv. All this hype about the band led to people considering Kings of Leon the most popular new rock band in the world. In 2010 they released Come around Sundown which everybody thought would be such a great album considering how good Only by the Night was(not really). I heard the album and there were no hit singles. They released a single called Pyro which wasn't very good and the only track I could tell that was even a bit interesting was called The End. The album was a disappointment but it showed what became obvious which was the bands career was built on hype that they could never live up to. They only had 2 songs that people gave a **** about and those weren't even that good. Eventually the band just faded away from popularity like all fads do.

To be continued. Lots more bands will be mentioned in future posts.

My favourite bands would be Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Megadeth, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Vines, Sepultura and there's more but those are my main favorites. I know you're thinking that all I wanna do is talk about how **** bands are that I'm making it out that all bands suck but that's not the case at all. I'm just giving my opinions on some overrated bands that are considered geniuses when all they are fueled by is hype and bull****.

Nathanblake719 05-14-2018 03:16 AM

I'm pretty old school with my tastes but I don't care because that's my favorite period for music.

Nathanblake719 05-14-2018 04:21 AM

I'm also a fan of R.E.M and Pantera. I know my tastes are pretty old school. But to me rock started dying in the 2000's and now has become what we see today. The 80's and 90's were the golden age of rock.I wish I were around in those days to experience it live. I also Like The Doors and Jimi Hendrix those are my two favourite 60's rock acts.

Nathanblake719 05-14-2018 04:38 AM

Some more bands that I like are The Cranberries, Tonic, Urge Overkill, The Pixies. I even like pop solo artists Like Bryan Adams and Richard Marx. The Brian Jonestown Massacre or ok, I only like their album called Give It Back. The Dandy Warhols suck but I like their hit Bohemian Like You.

Funny how Nick1976 would have said that rock died straight after the 80's ended

I think there's still some good rock acts, they just tend to be pretty obscure. Christian Mistress, Jess and the Ancient Ones, Royal Thunder and other bands that got started well into the 2000's - I think they're really damn good. Especially Christian Mistress, who are one of my favorite rock bands.

grindy 05-14-2018 04:47 AM

Holy ****. Those are some of the blandest, most overrated acts ever.
I don't see how they are in any way different from the boring bands you rightfully **** on in this thread.

Nathanblake719 05-14-2018 05:06 AM

Oh yeah the 2000's definitely had some great rock albums but it was far less than the previous decades. I remember when I first started getting into rock in the mid 2000's when I first heard BYOB BY System of a down I thought "These guys must be satanists" but now heavy music like that to me is like relaxing ocean sounds. It's just easy to listen to. Rock was still reasonably healthy at the time with American idiot by Green Day and System Of A down doing well. I remember that's when I first heard My Chemical Romance with the song Helena. I liked their first album but then they came up with that **** concept album Welcome to the Black Parade and Gerard Way cut his hair and dyed it blonde and they wore matching outfits and stuff. I didn't like them after that.

Well if those bands I like aren't good than I don't know what is. To me they aren't irrelevant
like allot of the crappy bands my friends like. They had a huge impact on rock and music their music is still remembered and they've inspired me to do what I do so I think they must be good. I think there's definitely a difference in quality in the bands that I like and the bands that I listed as being overrated.

MicShazam 05-14-2018 05:15 AM

If SOAD counts as rock too, then it's a whole other picture. Then I'd say there's tonnes of great rock music happening now.

Yeah SOAD are definitely rock. They're probably best described as alternative metal, sometimes labeled nu metal. Well in the 2010's I've gotta say I cant see much good happening. It's pretty non existent right now but I'm hoping that things will pick up for the good of mankind because Camilla Cabello sure isn't gonna come up with anything worth remembering.

What is it with you and Nick claiming rock died in [insert decade here]? You see why we compare you to him, and why some of us thought you were him? Why do you feel it necessary to tell us what bands you think suck? Most people here tend to recommend bands, try to get people into them, not just spit vitriol in their general direction. Ah, guess it's pointless talking to you. Or Nick.

Yeah you're right I wouldn't consider it old school either but sometimes I feel guilty for not liking allot of newer bands and I feel the need to justify my tastes . I'm not sure what I would like from the last 10 years The Script, Imagine Dragons, Snow Patrol, Panic at the Disco,Fall Out Boy, The Black Keys, Yellow card, Plus 44. I wouldn't listen to those bands if someone paid me.

I don't know whats wrong with saying the same line in different posts but ok. I never said it did die. It's still alive in the hearts and minds of fans around the world but Khalid is the new rock star of our times these days. Drake is considered a ****ing genius of music. No offense, but I think you need to actually try harder and check some more things out. You're guaranteed to find things you will like if you actually try.

No trying = your view will stay the same.

This is a dedicated music forum, so the "everything sucks now and I'm not even gonna try" attitude is pretty opposite of how everyone else in here thinks.

I've said it a million times and I'll say it again: If you don't think there's lots of great music coming out now, you're just not paying attention.

Nathanblake719 05-14-2018 05:45 AM

Did they get as much attention as they do now. Look at the **** video for This is America ****en trending on youtube. The guys on Jimmy Kimmel getting the spotlight and Nikki Minaj is close by waiting for her time on screen. Where the **** is the attention on rock music. It's like people these days think distorted guitars are diseased or something they'd rather hear Nikki Minaj's ass bang against the ground.

Trends change. In the 50's, people thought rock'n'roll was unholy noise made by people with no brains.

What does it matter what's on TV or on the radio anyway? Turn it off! You can listen to any music ever made very easily. The choice is yours. And new rock music is being made constantly, you just choose to stick your fingers in your ears and pout.

You're right i just ignore the **** that's being served to the masses on a weekly basis. I see it happen all the time and i just stare in disbelief that this is what they're suggesting we consume. But I'm always open minded to any new bands that I may discover. I hope that i do find new bands because it's even easier than ever to do that because of streaming platforms like spotify. Believe me I don't have my fingers in my ears.

Check out Charly Bliss. Highly recommended if you like Weezer and Veruca Salt. Other great "modern" rock bands:

Pup
The Wonder Years
State Champs
Cloud Nothings
Parkway Drive
Between The Buried And Me
Cable 35
Violent Soho
Courtney Barnett
Ghost
Barlow
Vektor

^ In fairness to Nathan, that is what his thread is about. But I must admit that I have a similar question for Nathan: If so many popular bands disappoint you, why not step away from the mainstream instead of complaining about it ? In Music Banter it's easy to find music that is original and off the beaten track. Here are just two of many possible directions to explore:-

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm not a huge fan of weezer but I did like the opening melody of the sweater song but the rest of the song gets a little bit average. Even though I'm not a huge fan I can clearly see how their 90's work is far superior to their 2000's work with the green album which had crap songs like Hash Pipe and Island in the sun and then that other album with that crap song Beverly Hills. I've already mentioned earlier in the thread that I hate Parkway Drive and Ghost.....Well I've heard of them but to me they seem to be another Slipknot or Lordi. I hate bands like that with costumes. Gimmicks have no place in rock in my opinion. Kiss are the masters of that.

I've been a fan of them for close to thirty years, but I didn't realize they were so highly rated circa 2018 that anyone would call them overrated.

Bolded one: it shows a lack of thought being put into your posts. Nobody's expecting everyone here to be a writer or use flowery prose, but check out some of the other posts/threads. Repetition is just lazy. I repeat, repetition is just lazy.

Bolded two: Nobody's saying Nick is a bad guy, but he's made a fool of himself here by constantly ranting on (a bit like you, though at least you seem to be amenable to listening and perhaps even reconsidering) about the bands he hates, why today's music sucks, and we've heard it all before. People have tried to engage with him and he just refuses, which is why he a) sucks and b) probably knows he's wrong.

As MicShaz says, every generation has **** on the radio, to quote Robbie Williams, so listen to your music on other sources: Spotify. Bandcamp. Soundcloud. YouTube. Or ask for recs here. And as for Bryan Adams, nobody's saying you can't like him. People laugh at me here for liking Bon Jovi and Journey, but I don't give a toss. However I don't then go on about how (say) Slipknot or Badbadnotgood are ****, even if I don't enjoy them. The trick is realising that not everyone will like what you like, not everyone will hate what you hate, and in the end, being able to live with that.
