Totally but it's not like quiet/loud is a bad trope. Opeth are fine they're just not that interesting.

Their last few albums have been seriously poor and underwhelming but Damnation, Orchid, and Deliverance are incredible albums that mean a lot to me. Akerfeldt is a great human being too. I do agree that they hang out with the overrated Steve Wilson too much. Porcupine Tree is the ultimate boring ass band that gets too much hype, not Opeth.

Pretty much sums up every artist/band that you've put up on a pedestal during my time on this forum.

I was gonna respond to this but then I tripped over Led Zeppelin making the most boring folk rock ever.

Opeth are a mixed bag, but Damnation is a beautiful record and of their last couple of albums Watershed is probably the best: eclectic and heavy and does the best job balancing Akerfeldt's various musical obsessions (70's prog weirdness and the metal he likes).

Oh, and Storm Corrosion was an awesome project. Proof that collaborating with Steven Wilson can reap good results now and then.

Out of five? Then, on a personal level, no way.

On a more distanced level where I'm asking myself to simply judge whether they are good musicians, have a style of their own, sound good... yeah ok, I guess, but then I'd give 4 out of 5 to thousands of albums I won't actually bother listening to.
