The Album Club: "Nuevo Dia" by Lole y Manuel

After all the shenanigans of the last week, we're back here with the Album Club albums and round five ends with a late entry from Frownland. Vote, discuss, debate, review and talk about it here.

I looked on YouTube, and I didn't see a whole album nor a playlist. However the album is on Spotify.

After all the drama that goes into these things, I am afraid to state an opinion anymore. (So, I guess) the best way to describe my sentiments towards this album is through an analogy:

Paco Peña:Lole y Manuel::John Coltrane:Billy Childs (& guess singers)

Where I am a Paco Peña and John Coltrane fan, and in my opinion they are the pinnacle in their respective genres.

So the question remains does this album blows my socks off? I would say quite emphatically 'no.' However it doesn't mean I hates it.

edit: Thanks for sharing Frownland. I imagine I will listen to this album again, and look for other music by them.

I literally can't think of any drama happening in the Album Club specifically. A few weeks back, I did call OH's opinion, that the mere existence of albums like Billy Child's Map to the Treasure was outright hurtful to jazz, "****ing retarded". But that was about it. I stand by that, btw :p:

EDIT: I mean, there was that business with Rubber Soul and such, but that didn't have anything to do with any disagreement about the music. It could have happened in any other thread.

I agree. Any "drama" being created here seems to be down to Neapolitan himself, who seems to keep taking personal insult if everyone doesn't fall over themselves praising his albums. Got to take the rough with the smooth, and there has been some very rough with my albums! :laughing: And probably will continue to be so.

I guess this is technically the 2nd flamingo album we've gotten here in duh club, but this one is a bit older and has a different atmosphere. There's an almost ritualistic melodic progression running through 'Bulerías de la Luna', for example, that reminds me more of oud music out of the Middle East. But that's obviously the point: this is one very progressive flamingo.

I voted like. Let's say 7.5 out of 10.

I'm listening to it now, but all I can say is that I hope there are some instrumentals, because the guitar is great but that voice? No me gusta! :yikes: I guess it's the flamenco style, but I don't enjoy that shouted, wailing sort of harsh vocal. We'll see how it goes, but this may be a struggle.

It's called passion, look it up.

My full review to come, I want it to be a goodin.

Please show me a post where someone said something negative about one of my albums and I immediately responded emotionally charged. Because I don't remember commenting even with positive comments. I admit I did not like that cheap joke you did with me and rubber soul at the start of the The Like - Release Me thread. I thought it was quite unprofessional and uncalled for. Here I am trying to figure out what is Trollheart doing with that comment and I never figured it out, all I remember that it denigrated into an Abacab discussion, which spurned off into its own thread. :rolleyes: Yes, I am trying to figure out the motives behind some of your actions and posts - trying to formulate theories and hypothesizes, but that is not me getting emotionally or anything like that is purely a cold calculating intellectual pursuit. Let's just say that I am on to you, buddy.

I'm not suggesting it's not, not at all. I'm sure this kind of singing is highly-prized and sought after in this genre, and I have no doubt she is recognised and celebrated as an excellent and accomplished proponent of her art. I'm not in any way saying she is wailing because she can't sing. I understand. But some things just don't chime with me, and this kind of singing sets my teeth on edge. Doesn't make it bad, doesn't mean it's not talent, or that I would counsel anyone else not to listen to it. But it is not for me. Love the guitar, hate the voice.
Again, shrug.
