While my favorite Swans record is White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity, I submitted COP because it is both an early industrial masterpiece and because it was the album that took in the best ideas of No Wave and somehow fused them with more contemporary "heavy" ideas for 1984. I sometimes wonder if Slayer and other bands were paying attention to Swans at this point in their career, because elements of COP's production approach feels echoed in a lot of sludge and metal-tinged albums of the second half of the 80's. 'Clay Man' and the title track are particularly hard hitting, but the whole record is remarkably consistent.

How can I not vote this a 10? Brutal and punches you in the f*cking face. People try to show me music all the time at the record shop that is "offensively loud and harsh" and then proceed to tell me about Cradle of Filth and other lame sh*t. I always counter with early Swans.

This album is an absolute visceral slow-burning assault on your ears. For it's entire runtime, it sounds completely malevolent and evil. Like showing the dark twisted underbelly of society in plain view for anyone brave enough to see it. It holds no prisoners. And not a hook to be heard anywhere throughout. I think I like this one even better than Filth, to be honest.
9/10. Oh wait, am I too late with this one? Oh well... |
