Day one of my attempt.
Report begins: no longer a wall of noise. I can now hear the great guitar playing and drumming. I can hear melodies. Holy ****, I can hear melodies! But the singer still sounds like a dog barking, except for the few times when he screams like a psycho. Still, not a bad start. I'll run it again tomorrow. Hold the phone! ****ing piano? PEE-ANN-OH? Are you serious? And some really nice bass starting "Phobophile". Of course, then it explodes and the dog is barking at the neighbours out in the back garden, sure, but nevertheless, unexpected.

I'm not sure I would like this album if not for a few defining qualities. Compositionally, it's bog standard death metal, but it has some pretty nuts, unhinged growling and pretty good, fat sounding production with a really nice sounding drumkit. Aside from the usual anemic death metal bass drum that actually isn't bassy at all, but eh, you can't have it all, I guess.
It might seem like a weird thing to say, but probably my favorite aspect of this album is the sound of the hihats, cymbals and the clanking bass when it's played on the higher strings. I'm not sure how inventive I'd say this album is. 1996 is somewhat late in death metal terms. If it's an unusual album, it's more due to how it feels than how it's put together from a more musical-theory oriented standpoint. I'm giving it a solid 8, for being a good entry in a style I'm not really a fan of. It's going to be one of the go-to albums if I just want an occasional dose of this sort of old-school DM. It's going to be rare, honestly. I prefer more modern extreme metal styles or newer takes on the DM genre/something adjacent, like Nile or Gorod, for example. |

You'd have to actually listen to the album and then spare a few sentences talking about it.

It wouldn't matter, as it was the only low score so you were well outvoted, as expected.
Seriously: anyone know what I'm supposed to do now? Monkey: you want to take this over again?
