Your opinion here reads like hopeless music snobbery 101.
If being a snob means pissing on this money grab while real artist starve then count me in. If you’ve actually made money writing about jazz you’re definitely part of the problem.

Have taken great care to be forgiving about your yearly lists but you would be doing yourself a solid leaving jazz out of it.

Funny you say that because jazz is pretty much left out of it from 1967 on

*(I'll admit Bitches Brew will be an exception though)

Oh, stop pouting.

Look, I like what I like, just like anybody I hope. Is this the greatest piece of music ever? No, of course not. But, as Mic or Nea suggested, I was looking at it from how Laura Nyro's songs were interpreted, not so much as how it compared to the likes of Coltrane or Mingus. From that standpoint, yes, I did like the album overall.

And yes, admittedly I am a novice when it comes to jazz. The reason there are a lot of jazz albums on my early lists are because there wasn't much else out there album wise. Like most of us here, I was raised on rock, or at least certain genres within the form.

And I'm a fanatical Beatles fan. That doesn't mean I'm going to run around and freak out on someone because he doesn't like I Am the Walrus. I hope I'm never looked at as a music snob because I know different people have different tastes and that's okay.

So lighten up, will ya

Bah. Jazz snobbery is a tedious anachronism that will die a slow death, as it should. It's nothing but narrowminded self-satisfaction. That kind of **** attitude will do far more to damage the longevity of jazz than anything else could.

Another few facts:

1) The album I selected for this thread cannot kill or harm "real" jazz, because it is not a zero sum game. Would some guy who bought this album somehow run out and buy a Coltrane album instead, had this Billy Childs album not existed? No way.

2) What about the outlets that praise this album? they will praise other kinds of jazz as well, and so does Ted Gioia (en masse, I might add), on whose web page I got this rec in the first place. This is no competition between two kinds of jazz. You see, other people aren't as narrowminded as you, OH. Hard to fathom, I know.

I'm not even kidding with any of this. I legitimately hold nothing buy scorn for you **** attitude. It's ****ing retarded.

Fun fact: I doubt he really listens to real jazz.

Everything about Hawk is music snobbery 101. If he likes something it's unassailable and anyone who doesn't like it can expect to get their door kicked in, but it he doesn't like it it's hot garbage and anyone who does like it can expect to get their door kicked in. There's no midway with the guy: love or hate, no in-between, with a good solid dose of **** you either way.
