As far as getting into the genre goes, have you heard Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch! or Sonny Sharrock's Ask the Ages?

I have not heard. Are you recommending them to me because you think I will like them, or are you recommending them because you think I should like them? Haha. |

They're both rather accessible imo and Ask the Ages can probably help you understand Coltrane better since it has Elvin Jones and Pharoah Sanders on it and Sharrock's guitar playing is very saxophone-esque. Definitely return to this album (and the rest of Coltrane's free work) if you start appreciating those records. Coltrane's earlier work is also much more accessible. This one's underrated imo

Thought this was a good thread to post this in.
Also I had a Coltrane analysis video on in the background and I thought that he was playing to it because it worked pretty well tbh. Also who did it better Jesus the Carpenter - Dearly Beloved/Summertime

Glad you and Frownie liked the video clip of Elvin Jones.

Is that a yes to Johnny Smith too? One of my favorites on the album is Cherokee - it's a standard needless to say.
