I think Tom Waits is both a very transparent phony and a dude with a pretty stong aesthetic instinct. I think some of his material really hits a certain feel pretty spot on. I don't think he would deny that his whole artistic persona is entirely made up. He's theatrical, first and foremost. For me, it's just that his gimmick is as much hit as miss, but I get what he's going for.

I just don't see how a public persona automatically means phoney. That's like calling Andy Kaufman a phoney. Really? It's an act? No sh*t.
