The Clash were like any other ambitious rock band, they wanted to be famous rock stars and make lots of money, they just had a BS gimmick they bought into to throw you off the scent. Political ideals you came up with while you were a poor teenager/twenty something mean ****all when you have an album and singles people actually start buying.
