I'd like to have a discussion in all seriousness here about music and the way it influences all of our lives..

How does everyone here think that the various types of music have inspired and changed the face of fashion over the years?? I believe that it has quite definitively, especially in recent years. But lets keep my opinion away for a little while..

What do you all think about the relationship between fashion and music?


(this can apply to any type of fashion not necessarily clothing)

i agree that it they both play a big role and affect each other.
example: a younger girl watches lets say, a rap video and sees what models have on. they want to be like the singers in the music videos and start to dress that way. sometimes inappropiately*sp* but the singers definately play some sort of rolse model on them.

the style that people have could possibly tell what kind of music they listen to-most of the time. basically stereotyping. say... a guy in, air ones a long tee and semi baggy jeans with a doorag thing. you can mostly assume that he mainly listens to rap, hiphop and that genre. or if another boy is dressed in say like, hurley shirts and not so baggy jeans with like a trucker hat or something .. you mainly assume he listens to emo, screamo, hardcore-something along those lines.

what i'm trying to get at is that you can mostly easily assume what kind of music someone listens to simply by their fashion. fashion tells a lot about a person. as if you stood a girl with raggy clothes next to a girl with nice, elagent clothes- you can safely assume the one girl comes from a relatively wealthy family maybe and the other doesn't.

i guess that's my point.

I think it's also an age thing. As teenagers, we are trying to define ourselves. At that age music plays a big part of our lives because it's a trying time and music really hits how we are feeling then. Same way is fashion. I mean going through late grade school and high school I had plenty of looks. I had the long skater cut colored Manic Panic white (man did that go well when I got back to Catholic high school :p: ), then had a more of a preppy look, and then the rap side.

Now I have a more ecclectic music taste and I have my own style.

Point is that music can't always define your style if you listen to a lot of genres. And added on that I re-iterate the age thing. I'm not saying that teenagers are fickle and change styles all the time to fit in. Don't get me wrong. I just think that teen-agers are more enthusiastic about music and are more excited to throw themselves into something they like, music, style, fashion, politics even sometimes...

haha... yea that is true that sometimes you can't define a person's music taste with their fashion, but, in general i think it's a pretty good shot.
definately agree on the changes because that's what being a teenagers does to ya.

thrice girls actually walked around wearing ties because of avril lavigne, or was it their style before? :\

I had a bunch of girls at my school who wore ties because of her.. I just thought.. MEDIA WHORE!!!

Thats something I was getting at.. I had the urban look when I was younger then I kinda went into a punk stage and after that I tried to act like a clubber. Nowadays when I listen to all those things plus jazz, funk, and alot of other things, I find it hard to define my personal style based on the fact that I dont fit into a clique(sp) or group of people. I guess its good in a way because that way people see me for who I am and not who I'm trying to be.

Anyways, I think that fashion styles associated with music styles are good to an extent, such as being able to indentify yourself, and to fit into a group of people who share your interests (which is important for teenagers). However, when it reaches the point where people wont associate with you because of your personal style or the way you dress etc. its exceeded the extent of its worth. Overall I dont think theyre the best thing out there, simply because people arent being true to themselves.

ya, i think it definitely does. about the avril thing, my school is more into the whole britney/christina fake blonde slut thing, myself not included. it's kinda funny really, there's this big group of girls who are all exact clones. bleached blonde hair down to just past the shoulders, skin-tight jeans that show their thongs when they sit down, skin tight shirts that show as much of their stomach as possible. I'm not really sure if I have a distinct style. I mean I definitely know what kind of clothes I like right away, and my best friend always can tell if it's something I'll wear, so i obviously have a certain style, but i'm not really sure about describing it with "punk", "preppy", "club", that sorta thing.

I noticed that eltiraaz mentioned that it's hard to define his personal style because he doesn't really fit into a clique or group of people. Lately i've been noticing that really close knit groups seem to kind of dress alike. personally, I have a few really good, close friends, and we kind of bounce around between a bunch of different groups of people. I have friends all over the city, who are as different as possible from one another. I think that who you are friends with kind of influences your style, to a certain extent too.

I agree with that to some extent. However, I went to a school that had people from different areas coming to one place so you got a mix of all kinds of diversity. In my group we had a preppy guy, a hip hoppish style, that slacker look... and girls. I don't think I cared about what style the girl was back then haha... just as long as it included hanging out with me.

Well, I dunno about you guys.. but at my school its taken to the extent of where someone wont go out with someone else because "hes a gino, and shes a skater", I think thats ridiculous..

at my school, we all wear uniforms. :D
i don't think things go on like that.. instead it's "she's/he's got a nice body-i'll talk to them"
