1. Incognito was formed in 1981 by 'Bluey' Maunick, who also serves as the group's composer, producer and lead guitarist. He's got something of a rotating set of vocalists who he works with depending on the material, but the band is pretty much a U.K. institution at this point. Some people say they were the first "acid jazz" group.

2. Linda Perhacs is an old favorite, especially that debut album she did way back in 1970 before jumping into a full-time dental hygienist career for the next thirty something years.

I don't really hate nu-metal as such, but it's mostly not all that interesting musically. I think that the most salvageable element of nu-metal from that time is this commonly polished, but also very beefy and full sounding production style.

This song specifically: Some of the riffs could have been good, but they're just not quite there. Worst of all is really just that sorry excuse for a hook in the chorus. Like most nu-metal, I find it inoffensive but a bit dull. The aforementioned heavy, groovy sound is the only thing that really does much for me here.

This is in "album-I-need-to-own" territory. Very. ****ing. Good. Thanks for pointing me in this direction!

This might not make a lot of sense to you, but it strikes me as a lot in style with music from Japan. There's so much jazzy video game music that I've heard over the years that sounds much like this, so I'm curious about the origins of this particular style of jazz (as I'm assuming it's at least partially jazz).

Epilogue:

A few seconds in and I can already tell that the music is going to be good. I'm slowly getting into the vocals too. She reminds me a bit of some artists whose pop albums I don't like at all, but it's really only a question of listening to this enough that I stop making those connections in my mind. I am very much hoping that it won't be one of those cases where an artist has one or two interesting songs, and then some more "normal" sounding music filling out the rest of the discography. I guess my worry comes from 1) how she reminds me of certain pop singers and 2) how this sounds a bit R&B at times.

On to the second track. Crossing my fingers!

Ride the Lightning:
Allright, a more bluesy vibe. She shows some vocal versatility here. Yeah, this is not bad. I could get into this, but I will need to return to both songs a few times to see if it grows on me. Both tracks are quite promising. Good one, DWV.

Allright, now that I've caught up to all the stuff in between, it's finnally time for this one.

Before I press play, I can say that I always enjoy checking out metal where I can't really figure out the genre based on the cover artwork. To me, that promises a chance of something musically inventive, so I tend to get my hopes up based on non-standard artwork.

A minute in, I'm thinking Sentenced. Gothy, a bit thrashy, a bit of groove... My problem with Sentenced is how the vocalist is waaaayy overdoing it. This band here is immediately way nicer in terms of vocals. I think I could get into this. Pretty good stuff and it doesn't immediately sound like any one other band that I can think of. The Sentenced comparison is only partially appropriate.

Very nice, that's for sure, but I do wish there was a bit more "action", to sound like a pleb.
It's quite "sondtrackey" in nature. The general vibe of this track is quite enjoyable.

Sort of like Vashti Bunyan, crossed with some modern indie-singer/songwriter (a lot of such is very low key and soft-voiced, at least of what I've heard).
Not the sort of song that announces itself by barging down the door and making itself part of your life immediately.
I will need to hear this some more times to get a feel for it. Maybe I'll dive into the album.

She's very much a bluesy artist. I'd listen to other tracks instead of revisiting these songs.. Her cover album Mockingbird is fantastic and her newest album Babble has a nice mix of lyric content and sounds. Don't worry she's not pop with a couple offbeat tracks that I gave you examples of.

Lol that wasn't a rec. I was just drunk and I guess I had a bunch of tabs open and thought this was the What Are You Listening To? thread. This post should have just been ignored but I was too lazy to edit it.

Anacrusis were actually a techy death(ish) thrash band turned prog metal band (with still a lot of thrash), and formed two years before Sentenced, so yeah not really a meaningful comparison I guess. Unless they both just so happened to have arrived at similar sounds from disparate beginnings, but I don't really remember getting an Anacrusis vibe the few times I've checked out Sentenced.

I haven't listened to much of their 2nd and 3rd albums as I don't think they quite hit the nail on the head as much as they did with their debut and fourth album (from which that song came). Their debut is also amazing and one of the best thrash albums ever while still being pretty unique. Just a great band and I really should give their other albums more of a shot. But here's something from the debut.

It may be primarily the vocals and production style that reminds me of Sentenced, although it's worth noting that Sentenced also went through at least one change of musical style.

First reaction to this other track here is that I think I prefer the previous one. Seemed more interesting to me. This is a bit interesting though. Reminds me ever so slightly of both Death and Dark Angel.
