I can't deny that this album fulfills its goals. It's ethereal and jumps from being romantic to haunting to almost lonely. I love the way that he leads the melody from solo to dense tonal chords. There are many beautiful moments on this record when the organ leads from behind and adds a little bit of flavour to it. Whether it's the recording space that they did it in or just very well produced, the reverberance is great.
However, there was very little about this record that really grabbed me. I can appreciate the atmosphere that it builds, but I think that adding some minimal percussion would make this much better. It works best as a handful of tracks, as I felt that the album dragged on a bit and felt monotonous. This is also one of those things that is so ingrained in my culture via soundtracks that it's difficult to tell what he really added to this outside of what had already been made in this style. Gotta love that atmosphere though. I'll go with a 3.5/5

Hand cymbal punctuation would have worked really well imo. It still works on its own of course, just thinking about what would make me want to return to it more.

I don't get it. Can't everything be improved on?

Well I think most anything can, and that's what would have gotten it a 5 star rating from me if it was executed well so suck it.

Yes, but I don't really think it's up to us to decide what an 'improvement' is. Someone like Part has spent much of his life contemplating his aesthetic, and I'd suggest it's not as if he didn't consider/hasn't considered percussion but rather made a conscious choice to eschew it. It's not that it wasn't 'executed well' but rather you don't care for a certain aspect of how he approaches music. Perhaps one day this musical decision will grow on you or maybe it won't, but IMO we ought to take the music on its own terms rather than our own, especially when the composer would clearly have the ability/imagination to supply what we would consider to be an improvement.
