All right then, time to check out some of the albums you've rated for February but which are
Album title: Fantasizing About Being Black Artist: Otis Taylor Suggested by: Frownland Genre: Blues Nationality: American Release date: February 17 Position in Discography: Fifteenth Fear Factor: Low Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Somewhat Average RYM Score: 3.40 Cool and smooth to kick off with, great bass rhythm, very – well, there's just no other word for it – cool. Second track is a little more upbeat, little more frantic, and the banjo on “Banjo Bam Bam” is, again, cool and different. I like the introduction of wild electric guitar on “Hand On Your Stomach”. Stupid thing to say, I do know this, but it almost sounds like it could be the blues equivalent of a drone track. Okay I'll move on. Trumpet (cornet?) in the next track is great, really upbeat and happy, makes you want to move your feet, and I don't mean towards the exit, while the harmonica, one of my favourite “backup instruments”, adds a great feel to “D to E Blues”. A great album to kick back to and not worry too much about dissecting. After all, this is the blues, ya dig? Check out more from this artist? Yup Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yup Expectation Index: 0

Album title: Unfold Artist: The Necks Suggested by: Frownland Genre: Avant-Garde Jazz/Free Improvisation/Contemporary Jazz Nationality: Australian Release date: February 10 Position in Discography: Nineteenth Fear Factor: High Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.39 Whether this is supposed to disarm me or not, or just lull me into a false sense of security, there's a lovely piano and organ intro to the first track that is quite spacey, none (so far) of the frenetic, seemingly chaotic music that tends to characterise my poor understanding certainly of AGJ. Only four tracks, in fairness, but none of them under fifteen minutes, with the longest hitting twenty-one, so much to get through. Second one is more driven by what sounds like a church organ (some sort of organ anyway) with definitely a more jazzy tone than the opener. It's good stuff but 15-20 minutes of basically the same stuff is a little hard to take. It gets a bit boring at times. Good background music I guess. But I'm now halfway into the third track and I don't feel I can take another twenty minutes plus of this. Just too boring really. Check out more from this artist? Probably not Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Again, probably not Expectation Index: 3

Album title: Targ Artist: Bargou 08 Suggested by: Frownland Genre: Electronic/World/Folk/Country Nationality: German Release date: February 17 Position in Discography: Debut Fear Factor: High Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.39 It says this guy/band is German, but this sounds more like African chants than anything else, not that I'd know. Ah no, this is ****ing boring. Maybe I'm just not cut out for World Music, if this is what it is, but it sounds like that scene in Empire Strikes Back (or maybe it's Return of the Jedi, I don't know) where the Ewoks are all dancing around. I hate that ****. I'm outta here. Check out more from this artist? No way Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Not sure yet; I certainly didn't like this anyway Expectation Index: 0

What a shame. Those grooves are more infectious than spitting into an open wound.
And the group is from Tunisia, not sure where the German stuff came from. Was wondering how you'd feel about that Necks album since it's pretty different from free jazz conventions. At least you know a little more about the less wild side of avant-garde jazz.
