Album title: False Hope Artist: Kevin Garrett Genre: R&B Nationality: American Release date: February 3 Position in Discography: Second Fear Factor: Moderate Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 2.53 An EP rather than an album, there are only five tracks on this. Just as well: this is the most boring, generic crap I've heard in a while. I honestly don't know what to write. Just a big blank bore. Next! Check out more from this artist? No Check out more from this genre or subgenre? No Expectation Index: 8

No prob mate. Took a while but now that the January one is done I'll just do each month as I go along, which should make it easier to follow what's being reviewed.

Album title: Testify Artist: The Knocks Genre: Electronic/EDM Nationality: American Release date: February 3 Position in Discography: Fifth Fear Factor: Moderate Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: N/A Another six-track EP. I'm not familiar with EDM but at the moment this sounds like soul or funk to me, but what do I know? At least it's more energetic and interesting than yer man Garrett, though a stick insect would be more energetic and interesting than him. I don't feel this is really my thing but these guys are good at what they do. I'm sure it's great to dance to, not so much to review. It's certainly catchy and memorable, and I can feel my toes tap – stop that! Damn! They won't obey me! Check out more from this artist? Probably not Check out more from this genre or subgenre? I might Expectation Index: 2

Album title: Safe in Sound Artist: Lower Than Atlantis Genre: Alt-Rock Nationality: English Release date: February 3 Position in Discography: Fifth Fear Factor: Low Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Yes Average RYM Score: 2.40 This is what tends to annoy me about the phrase “alt-rock”. What's alternative about this? It's about as generic as you can get, I hear nothing interesting in it and it's just faceless and boring as hell. In fact... Check out more from this artist? Nah Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yes Expectation Index: 9

Album title: After the Party Artist: The Merzingers Genre: Punk Rock/Indie Rock/Heartland Rock Nationality: American Release date: February 3 Position in Discography: Fifth Fear Factor: High Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.17 Man, I have to admit to being pretty bored with this too. It's not that the music is bad or that there's no imagination in the songs, I just, well, don't care. Maybe it's just that kind of day. But I'm not feeling this. Not so far anyway. I guess in fairness it's not bad, it just isn't really doing anything for me. I don't hate it, but I certainly don't love it, and I doubt I'll remember any of the songs once this is over. I'm going to try not to bail, as I have a feeling it's just the mood I'm in today and that this may in fact be a decent record, and I don't want to dismiss it out of hand. But I'm still struggling. I'll give it one thing though: I'm pretty sure this isn't Punk, or if it is, it's Punk Jim, but not as we know it. Check out more from this artist? I really don't know Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Probably Expectation Index: 3

Album title: The Rhapsody Tapes Artist: Ocean Grove Genre: Nu-Metal/Harcore Punk Nationality: Australian Release date: February 3 Position in Discography: Debut Fear Factor: High Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.23 If Slipknot and Korn are the apex of Nu-Metal then I don't need any more of that in my life, thank you, and from the sound of the opening of this album I would venture to opine that the world does not need an Australian Nu-Metal band either. Okay, “The Wrong Way” is a decent song, but that's five tracks in. Will it be an aberration? Well I suppose it's nowehere as bad as Slipknot or Korn, but I still wouldn't want to listen to more of this. Check out more from this artist? No Check out more from this genre or subgenre? If I can, no Expectation Index: 0

Album title: Sing It Now: Songs of Faith and Hope Artist: Reba McIntyre Genre: Country/Gospel Nationality: American Release date: February 3 Position in Discography: Twenty-Ninth Fear Factor: High Familiar with this artist? No but I've heard of her Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Not really that much no Average RYM Score: 2.72 I was going to say there's nothing quite as white as a country album about God, but then these are gospel songs, so that's kind of the preserve of the black community. Nevertheless, I can't think of anything more conservative than a country album of gospel songs, unless, as here, it's a double album of country and gospel songs! Praise the Lord (Vader)! This may be quite the slog. At least they're well known songs, such as “Amazing Grace” (which, despite my atheist nature, is one of my alltime favourite songs) “Oh Happy Day” and “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”, and let's be honest: if there's any medium (other than gospel itself or CCM) that these songs are going to find their best expression in, it's country and western. All right, I'm a bit disappointed with her version of “Amazing Grace”: acoustic and limp-wristed. That song needs power and soul behind it. Not impressed. I'll hang on till “Chariot” but then I think I'm gone. Meh, at least when it comes up it sounds like a proper gospel song, which none of the others have. Oh no I'm wrong: they just countrified it. Lord forgive them. This is awful. Pale, limp and frankly embarrassing. That's as far as I can make it: another side of this album is too much to bear thinking about. Think I'd rather throw my lot in with Old Nick! Bye! Check out more from this artist? Unlikely Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yes Expectation Index: 0

Album title: Remember Me: Essential, Vol 1 Artist: Ru Paul Genre: R&B/Dance/Pop/Some damn thing or other... Nationality: American Release date: February 3 Position in Discography: Twelfth; fifth compilation Fear Factor: High, almost Critical Familiar with this artist? I know him but not his music Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 2.69 What is it? Have I not been sacrificing to the right gods, or something? It's that crack about Satan at the end of the last review isn't it? Well I understand but this is harsh: having just finished (or at least, struggled halfway through) a really boring mix of country and gospel music, I'm faced with this. AND it's ****ing available!! For those who don't know, and care, Ru Paul is an American drag queen. Which leads me to wonder at the need for this, or any other album of his. I mean, if he's a good singer, why not release the album under his real identity? What advantage does it give him to sing these songs dressed as a woman? I mean, I've nothing against drag queens, crossdressers, transexuals, people who identify as sweeping brushes or walls, or aliens, but do they have to release albums? And if they do have to, can't they release better ones than this? Apparently this is a collection of his greatest hits. Well I didn't even know he sang. Well it seems he has an extensive discography. Fair play to him I guess. “Back To My Roots” features a performer called Skeletal Ki. Hmm. Surely not? Basically this is a collection of substandard disco/dance songs that don't allow Paul to stand out as anything special, though maybe his voice is good. Hard to say, with all the guest performers though. Not my (hand)bag, love. Yeah, this is ****. ****, as they say, this. Check out more from this artist? No ****ing way Check out more from this genre or subgenre? No Expectation Index: 0
