Album title: Gods of Violence Artist: Kreator Genre: Thrash Metal Nationality: German Release date: January 27 Position in Discography: Fourteenth Fear Factor: Low Familiar with this artist? A little Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Yes but not as much as I should be Average RYM Score: 3.35 Oddly Power Metal instrumental intro, then it kicks up into Thrash territory. Decent enough, though “Satan is Real” is just silly, especially the way it's sung. It's not the eighties, boys! It's also, to be fair, a very ordinary song. To be honest, the whole thing (so far) sounds pretty dated, though I know less about Thrash Metal than most people. I also am unfamiliar enough with Kreator's work to know if this is their usual style, but I do find snippets of PM influence going through some of these songs, and it's a little confusing. I'm also not mad about the constant growl of the singer, though he's far from Cookie Monster. Araya's much better at this sort of thing. There have been some good tracks, undoubtedly, but “Fallen Brother” is really the first time I sit up and take notice. To be fair, it really picks up from there to the end, but we're already on track nine of eleven at that point, so a little late. I wouldn't say it's a bad album at all, but I'm not blown away by it. Certainly rocks, but then, what metal album does not? These days I need more than just that. Check out more from this artist? I imagine at some point, yes Check out more from this genre or subgenre? How would you feel about giving us an update on your top 10 list for the year after every month you finish or so? it's a little hard to follow with the rating system and short reviews

Nah, seriously: I'll think about it. So maybe any albums that got a ten rating each month, make a top ten from them. I might, however it might not be in order. There's a lot of work to be done here. |
rather than a too 10 i think a top 3 and bottom 3 would be more interesting.

Album title: Road Less Traveled Artist: Lauren Alaina Genre: Country Nationality: American Release date: January 27 Position in Discography: Second Fear Factor: Moderate Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Some Average RYM Score: 3.08 I'm moderating my Fear Factor, given that there have been some pretty lousy country records on here in the last while, so I hope this one might be one of the good ones but I ain't taking any chances. Starting on a banjo is always a good way to get going in the right direction, however. I do hear touches of country pop here, but I'm not going to dismiss her right away. We'll see how this goes. Yeah I think this is more country pop than straight country. Title track is good, “Think Outside the Boy” similarly, “Next Boyfriend” is pretty terrible though. “Same Day Different Bottle” is nice, quite mature and well written, but overall this is not really the kind of country I want to be listening to. A little too fluffy for my tastes. Check out more from this artist? No Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yes http://www.trollheart.com/speed6.jpg Expectation Index: 0 |

Album title: I Hope You Don't Mind Me Writing Artist: Lucy Spraggan Genre: Pop Nationality: English Release date: January 27 Position in Discography: Fourth Fear Factor: Moderate Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? A little Average RYM Score: 3.50 Did I hear somebody ordering a burger or something at the end of “Loaded Gun”? **** that. It's not though, so far, the empty kind of pop pap I hate, but I haven't decided if there's any real substance to this just yet. I think there may be. “Grown up” and “I Don't Live There Anymore” are quite impressive and certainly lift this out of the range of banal pop. In fact, if anything this comes closer maybe to folk music. Then she goes into a rap for two songs, one accompanied by piano, and damn but they're both quite good. It seems very honest and sincere, all these recollections of her youth. I suppose it could be all affected, but it doesn't feel that way. Yeah, this is most definitely not what I'd call pop. Far deeper. Good writer. Very good album. I'm impressed. Check out more from this artist? yes Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Album title: Culture Artist: Migos Genre: Hip-Hop Nationality: American Release date: January 27 Position in Discography: Second Fear Factor: Critical Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.01 I'm not a fan of being shouted at as an album begins, but we'll see how this goes. First track is not bad; catchy anyway and kind of fun. Yeah this is okay so far. Melodies are catchy and it's kind of low-key. It's odd; I can't pick out anything I really loved but certainly nothing I hated, and I have no impulse to end it or wish it would end. Quite surprised, as with the previous album, with my reaction to this. Just in case anyone missed it: I did not hate it! :thumb: Check out more from this artist?
