Album title: Adiós Artist: Glen Campbell Genre: Country Nationality: American Release date: June 9 Position in Discography: Sixty-fourth and final Estimated Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg Have I heard of this artist? Yes Have I heard anything by this artist? Yes Average RYM Score: 3.19 What is it with this month and death? What is it, in fact, with this day and death? Two albums already released on this day in 2017 by artists who either were already dead or who died shortly after what turned out to be their last album was released, and now a third. Glen Campbell, soft country superstar, had been suffering from Alzheimer's for years, so much so that according to his producer, he couldn't remember the lyrics to the songs here and had to keep being prompted. But he knew enough to know he was dying, and wanted, like Bowie, to leave one last musical gift for his fans, and so the album was terribly poignantly but appropriately and prophetically titled simply Adiós . The album contains covers of some of his favourite songs, ones which he had never previously recorded, including Harry Nilsson's “Everybody's Talkin'”, Willie Nelson's “Funny How Time Slips Away” (on which the Red-Headed Stranger guests himself) and Dylan's “Don't Think Twice, It's Alright”. Most of these songs I don't know, bar the first one mentioned (and I see it wasn't written by Nilsson, but he certainly made it famous) but I do have to admit Campbell, like Berry on his last album, does not sound like a man facing death. Country music seems always generally to look back to the good times, often the hard times (sometimes they're one and the same, of course) and this is no exception, unsurprisingly. As Campbell gets ready to meet his maker, he uses his music, his favourite songs, to reflect on a life well lived. You may not like him or his music, (I don't, particularly) and if you don't then this album certainly will do nothing to change your mind about him. But in an era where many musicians die in retirement, often forgotten till the notification of their passing is posted, you have to admire men like Bowie, Berry and Campbell, who went out the way they wanted, doing what they loved and giving their fans one last final tip of the hat and a wink and a smile before they departed. Rest in Peace, Glenn. Adiós, compadre. Vaja con dios. Check out more from this artist? Not really my thing, no Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Album title: Revolution Come ... Revolution Go Artist: Gov't Mule Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock/Hard Rock Nationality: American Release date: June 9 Position in Discography: Eleventh Estimated Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg Have I heard of this artist? No Average RYM Score: 3.43 Decent bit of southern rock all right. “Pressure Under Fire” has a nice grindy, storming feel to it, “The Man I Want To Be” reminds me of classic Kansas, and “Dreams and Songs” is a strong blues ballad, even if it does borrow a little too freely from Creedence's “Long As I Can See the Light”. You certainly get the impression (whether it's the case or not) that these are guys who spend their time drinking hard, riding 'sickles and generally raising hell. It's good honest down-to-earth rock; not a lot more I can say really. “Easy Times” is an introspective, reflective ballad, and the title track is almost an epic, edging into eight-minute territory. The closer is good too, a gutsy, rocky reinterpretation of a traditional song. Check out more from this artist? Might do Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Album title: Wonder Artist: Hillsong United Genre: CCM/Worship Nationality: Australian Release date: June 9 Position in Discography: Fifth Estimated Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg Have I heard of this artist? No Average RYM Score: 3.61 I've said it before: take Jesus out of the lyrics of some CCM and you could be listening to pop, AOR, Adult Contemporary or even soft rock at times. Laugh at them all you want (and you will, as do I, to an extent) but these people have talent. Some of these songs are better written than a lot of the chart fare, and you have to admire their dedication to and enthusiasm for their subject. Of course, if you hate all of the above styles, then there's nothing here for you, and you can choose to laugh at the music here, but I choose to afford them the credit I think they deserve. Tune out the messages from the Church and it's music you can, if you want to, enjoy on its own merits. Yeah, there are some good songs here: “So Will I”, “Glimmer in the Dust”, the title track, “Life”. Sure, it's all cloyingly sentimental, but if you can get past the self-satisfied sense of being God's chosen singing for His glory, there's a lot to enjoy here. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm supposed to be officiating at a Black Mass, and I'm already late. You know how acolytes get. Check out more from this artist? That's a whole different thing. The only "laughing" I was doing was at their beliefs, not their music. So yeah, you are entirely fabricating something you would like me to have said, but I didn't, therefore you are wrong. QED. GTFO. |
*whoosh*
I was saying that you liking it doesn't mean that it's good. I hope you didn't spend too much time on your rebuttal to my one off line. |
