For a pop album, there's a fair bit of rock on display too. Not bad for a cartoon cat! Check out more from this artist? God no Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Album title: Revenge Artist: XXXTentacion Genre: Hip-hop Nationality: American Release date: May 17 Position in Discography: First mixtape; third overall Estimated Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg Familiar with this artist? No but I have heard of him Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: N/A With a title like that, I can assume this is going to be some angry stuff. Seems it is. Apparently there was some feud between him and a duck, sorry, Drake, over the opening song “Look At Me”, which is pretty hard-hitting and vitriolic, both in lyrical content and also in the music. The second track is very short, a little fragmented, then a sort of dancy one followed by what appears to be an acoustic guitar backing/sample with a sung vocal in a very faint and distant voice. Quite nice actually. That's called “King”, and near the end it powers up almost into a death metal or metal anyway roar, giving the song a real punch. “Slipknot” has a lovely jazzy piano line and is quite laid back; it's the longest of the eight tracks here, at just a second below three and a half minutes. That leaves only two tracks, with “Yung Bratz” starting off a little uncertainly, for me, then powering up into a heavy trap idea and the mixtape finishes on “RIP Roach”, another angry track, lot of power and energy in it. I couldn't call this great, but I wouldn't call it terrible. That's about all I can say really. Check out more from this artist? Not sure Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Album title: T-Wayne Artist: T-Pain/Lil Wayne Genre: Hip-hop Nationality: American Release date: May 18 Position in Discography: First collab Estimated Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg Familiar with this artist? No but heard of both Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 2.77 Oddly enough, hard, then impossible to find on Spotify. Nothing under T-Pain, nothing under Lil Wayne, and just to make life more difficult, there's already a rapper called T-Wayne! Finally found it on YouTube. A collaboration between the two rappers, a short mixtape of, again, eight songs, and the second one samples “The Oompa-Loompa Song” from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. ****ing hilarious! “Snap Ya Fangas” is good too, and the final song samples “American Pie” - well, not so much samples it as they use the lyric. Yeah, generally, other than the novelty factor of “Listen to Me”, this doesn't do a lot for me. Check out more from this artist? No Check out more from this genre or subgenre? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 2.88 Sound like Scissor Sisters to me. Dancy and fun I guess; “Wat R U Up 2Day?” features a very annoying sample of some kid singing, but the chorus singing on “Throttle Service” is quite good. Overall not terribly interested though. Not worth one exclamation mark, never mind three. Check out more from this artist? Nah Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Probably not Actual Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg |

Album title: Party Artist: Aldous Harding Genre: Folk/Pop Nationality: New Zealander Release date: May 19 Position in Discography: Second Estimated Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg Have I heard of this artist? No Have I heard anything by this artist? No Average RYM Score: 3.30 Nice blend of kind of gentle pop and folk music, and she has a good voice. Mind you, in the second song she goes a bit wild and her voice sounds like it's almost cracking. Lovely chorus on the title track. Mostly minimal music, the album rides on Harding's strong and powerful and yet at times very low-key voice. A very pleasant album, never gets really above the level of ballads in terms of tempo, but a very good one to relax to I would think. Impressive. Check out more from this artist? Album title: In the Rude! Artist: The Basics Genre: Rock Nationality: Australian Release date: May 19 Position in Discography: Third live album; seventh overall Estimated Rating: http://www.trollheart.com/speed5.jpg Have I heard of this artist? No Have I heard anything by this artist? No Average RYM Score: N/A Pretty basic (sorry) rock; “So Hard For You” is pretty catchy, “Bitten By the Bug” has a semi-reggae feel to it, and there's a good uptempo rocker in “With this Ship”. Not sure whether it's set up or not, but they seem to, during one of the encores, request suggestions from the audience for songs, and the one that's picked, “Home Again” is actually really good. Funny, too, when they keep making a mess of the intro to the last song. Again, I don't know if that's part of the act, but it is quite amusing. Overall though, a decent album but I wouldn't go mad about it or anything. Check out more from this artist? Might Check out more from this genre or subgenre? No Have I heard anything by this artist? No Average RYM Score: 3.63 Hey, this is very nice. I like it from the first track, but it really comes into its own on the third, the wistful “Pulling Teeth”, which has a very sixties S&G feel to it in ways. Kind of a Supertramp idea mixed in with a shot of Billy Joel then to “Man Down”, and given the relaxed and gentle nature of everything up to then, it's something of a shock when “Algebra in the Sky” rocks everything with a boppy uptempo song. Still relatively uptempo, “Sigh” is a cross between Dan Fogelberg and ELO, with more of the latter in the slower “Darkness”. Great stuff so far, I must say. Yeah, a really pleasant album. Not going to change anyone's world, I imagine, but really enjoyable. Check out more from this artist? Yes Check out more from this genre or subgenre?
