Album title: Back 2 Life Artist: LeToya Luckett Genre: R&B Nationality: American Release date: May 12 Position in Discography: Third Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.38 We're four tracks in now and I can't even think of anything to write. It's not even bad enough to write bad things about it; it's just, well, bland and boring to me. Of course, I'm no fan of R&B, but I find it hard to latch onto anything at all here. As it goes on I just get more bored and there's still nothing to write about. Someone guests on a rap on one of the tracks, but I really don't care who, or on what song. For the sake of clarity though, let's see: it's Ludacris, on “Grey”. Kind of an appropriate title, given how little impression this album is making on me. Okay! Finally! Something that wakes me up. “Worlds Apart” ia a nice slow, smoky blues number with some fine jazzy piano in it and also violin. If all the tracks were like this, then this album would be getting a much higher rating, but sadly we're already back to mediocrity with the sub-par “Weekend”; “Higher” is not too bad, but then “Loving You” re-establishes the poor quality and to be honest I'm surprised I managed to get through this without bailing. Album title: Bloom Artist: Machine Gun Kelly Genre: Alt Hip-hop/Indie Pop/Pop Nationality: American Release date: May 12 Position in Discography: Third Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 1.20 Love the opening track; I think there's possibly some Alan Parsons Project in the guitar riff there, but I couldn't swear to it. Very ominous, very trap, and “Go For Broke” is another good one, with a sort of upbeat pop feel to it. I really like “Kiss the Sky” too, great atmosphere to it, while “Bad Things” is the ninety-four-thousandth song to utilise the melody arrangement of Pachelbel's “Canon in D Major”. “Rehab” has a lot to recommend it, as does most of this album. Pretty damn impressive. Check out more from this artist? May do Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yes Actual Rating:

Album title: Thankful Artist: New Kids on the Block Genre: Pop Nationality: American Release date: May 12 Position in Discography: First EP; eighth overall Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? I've had the misfortune to have to listen to many of their albums, in the interests of science and my journal one dark year Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Yes Average RYM Score: 1.34 At least it's only an EP, so five tracks is all I have to suffer. First one is not bad, to be fair; a long way removed from the bland uptempo poppy nonsense they're known for. Second one (also the title) is good too, but “One More Night” returns to their boyband roots, ie it's ****, and from there it's basically a nosedive back to the band we all know and hate. Oh look! They even rob the bass line from “99 Red Balloons” for “Still Sounds Good”. Yeah. Right. **** off, guys: you're no longer kids and there are newer ones on your block now. I mean, Donnie Wahlberg is on Blue Bloods, as a grizzled middle-aged cop, for the love of god! You can't be kids forever. Grow up, guys, and retire with whatever shreds of dignity you still possess, if it's not too late. It is too late. Well, do us all a favour and retire anyway, then we'll all be thankful. Album title: Olga Tañón y Punto! Artist: Olga Tañón Genre: Pop/Latin Pop Nationality: Puerto Rican Release date: May 12 Position in Discography: Fifteenth Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: N/A You just can't beat the Latin rhythm, can you? It's impossible not to feel like dancing, though luckily for all involved, I restrain myself and confine myself to listening while tapping my toes. This album is hard to find information on, so much of what I'm writing is guesswork. It's good bouncy pop from the beginning anyway, with plenty of brass and congas and what have you, and she seems to be in a party mood. And that's basically all I can say. It's a party, so enjoy it. There's some guy singing with her on “Vuelva a Mi” (come to me?) which has a nice sort of relaxed feel to it, and hey, there's even a Spanish version of “Hallelujah” to close. But really, if you're having a party (as I believe people oftimes do) then you could do worse than throw this on. At least it'll get people up dancing! Check out more from this artist? Probably not Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Don't know Actual Rating:

Album title: After Laughter Artist: Paramore Genre: Synthpop/New Wave/Power Pop/Pop Rock Nationality: American Release date: May 12 Position in Discography: Fifth Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No but I've heard of them Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Some Average RYM Score: 3.37 Get a real feeling of early Duran Duran when this starts; very light and breezy. Yeah, well, too light and breezy really. It's not until “Fake Happy”, which is the fifth track, that I hear any sort of balls in this music. Up to then it's just been so ****ing wimpy. We'll see if it picks up from here. “26” is a nice little acoustic ballad with violins, “Idle Worship” is okay and “No Friend” is, well, different. A very faded, almost inaudible vocal, but the track is interesting. Overall though, not particularly impressed with this. Check out more from this artist? Album title: A Kind Revolution Artist: Paul Weller Genre: Rock/Pop Nationality: English Release date: May 12 Position in Discography: Thirteenth Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? Yes Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Yes Average RYM Score: 3.24 Sounds more like Tom Jones when he starts singing here, and the first two tracks are pretty boring really. I've never been that big of a fan of Weller, nor the Jam, though each had some decent songs. “Long Long Road” shows that there is something for me on this album, a really nice soulful ballad with fine orchestration, another good slow song in the bluesy “The Cranes are Back”, and it kind of takes something of an upswing from there. Yeah it's not bad I guess but I wouldn't be rushing out to buy it. Feeble Friday continues. Check out more from this artist? No Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yeah Actual Rating:

Album title: Pageant Artist: PWR BTTM Genre: Queercore*/Garage Rock/Indie Rock Nationality: American Release date: May 12 Position in Discography: Second Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Never ever heard of it Average RYM Score: 2.58 Sort of gives me the folk punk feel a recent album did, though in a more upfront and abrasive way, whereas that other one was very gentle and laid-back. Some it does come across as a little try-hard though, such as “Sissy”, but generally not bad at all. I wouldn't be a fan, but it's not the worst album I've ever come across. Hell, it's not even the worst album I've listened to today. Not really my thing though. Check out more from this artist? No Check out more from this genre or subgenre?
