Back to march we go, for more albums suggested by you guys that are
Album title: Winter Artist: Fen Suggested By: Paedentic Basterd Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal/Post-Rock/Blackgaze Nationality: English Release date: March 10 Position in Discography: Sixth Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Somewhat Average RYM Score: 3.39 Ah, I do like my ABM. This seems to be a pretty long album – something like seventy-five minutes long, if my abacus doesn't lie to me – and I'm assuming all instrumental? No, no: I hear voices almost right away, low though and kind of indistinct until suddenly there's that old Black Metal screech I love so well. Great atmosphere to this, good biting guitars and even the vocal melds in quite well with the music. First track is seventeen minutes long, though it doesn't seem like it at all. The second track (they're all called Winter with a number after it) “Penance” is a lot faster and bouncier than the opener, some great riffing on this and a mad drum solo. Ish. All these songs are long – I mean, really long: the shortest is just under ten minutes – but they're all really great. Some lovely laid back guitar in, um, “Interment”. Some nice “clean” vocals too. Overall, very enjoyable: powerful, epic, chilling at times with some really nice almost pastoral moments. Check out more from this artist? Yes Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yeah, I'll put it on your list for the April not-on-the-list sequence. You want to choose another for March then?

Album title: Antiphon Artist: Alfa Mist Recommended by: Frownland Genre: Hip-hop/Jazz/Soul Nationality: American Release date: March 3 (Just goes to show: Discogs have it as a June release! ) Position in Discography: Debut Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.28 This is super smooth and super cool when it starts. Talk about laid back! I assume I'll end up regretting saying this, as no doubt the rest of the album will be mad horns in my face or something “experimental” (read, something I'll hate/not understand) but this opener is over ten minutes long and it could be twice the length and still not long enough. This is just beautiful stuff. Even if the rest of the album sucks for me, this one track will have been worth listening to it for. Some sweet bass work on this near the end too, really stands out, and the percussion is, um, awesome. Just perfect really. Well, the second track is just as good, though in a different way. Kind of spoken word/rap over some really nice guitar with a sweet solo thrown in for good measure. Lovely female vocal on the fourth track, and I must be honest: there's nothing here I haven't loved so far. Wonderful piano outro with orchestral backing. The rap and the jazz really merge perfectly on “7th October”, and I like the way the music takes over for a while before he comes back in, with perfect timing, just near the end there. Very Santana-style guitar there on “Kyoki” and really a totally enjoyable experience all through the album, which I hadn't expected. Really impressed. Check out more from this artist? Album title: Below the House Artist: Planning for Burial Suggested By: Qwertyy Genre: Shoegaze/Sludge Metal/Slowcore Nationality: American Release date: March 10 Position in Discography: Third Estimated Rating: Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No but getting into Blackgaze Average RYM Score: 3.34 I like what I hear so far. First track is pretty harsh black metal type with some I don't know, maybe post-rock/metal thrown in, second track is a more relaxed, almost ambient piece with a lot of piano. Enjoying everything on this so far, will be marking this guy down as another one to gather up their recordings and get into their music. “Warmth of You” in particular is a real standout, while “Past Lives” is something I would definitely characterise as experimental, maybe even drone? Lovely organ leading the line on “(Something)” and the ambient pieces, long though they are, go by quicker than expected. Really impressed. Nice one! Check out more from this artist? Oh yeah Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Yeah Actual Rating:
