Much better. Though Scarecrow's pretty good too.

I mean Psychocandy's cool but my heart lies with Slayer.

Familiar with this artist? Only experienced their Christmas album a few years back. Still in therapy about that!
Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Yeah

Oh dear God no. There's something terribly creepy about a family making music – yes, I include the Jacksons in that – but a multi-generational family? Oh no. I fear this may break me, but we'll see how I do. In fairness, the opening track isn't terrible, got a nice almost hard rock vibe. This is another comeback album, though this time there's only (!) thirteen years between the albums. You know, it's hard to find fault with a song called “Fell In Love With an Alien”, and it's pretty good too. “Angel” is cringe-inducing though, especially when the child starts singing. And I could certainly live without the 10,560th cover of “Stand By Me”. Sigh. The tweeness continues in “Good Neighbor” (remember Drew Holcomb?) and while the violins make it nice and Celtic, there's just something cliched about it. You think?

“Why Why Why” is the first time since the opener that the Kelly Family go into a rock mode, and it's a nice change after all the sugary-sweet sentimental nonsense I've had to suffer up to now. There's some good guitar work here, and decent group vocals too. I wouldn't call this a terrible album – I really don't think it deserves the dismally low RYM rating it has – but it wouldn't be the sort of thing I'd be interested in exploring further. Only for a certain type of music fan, I guess.

Interesting to see an EP that isn't a K-pop one. Nice slow, moody number to kick off, quite dark; in fact to some extent it kind of mixes the likes of trap with r&b to give what could almost be called “dark pop”; no bouncy songs here (yet) about dancing with boys or drinking, despite the similarities in her name to another well-known popstar. Everything here is restrained, low-key, soulful and quite mature. Certainly puts the “blues” in “rhythm and blues”. She also doesn't force her voice like many pop artists: when she murmurs lines it's almost as effective as when others scream or grunt them. Check “Harmless” for an example of that. This is a nice change I must say. Will be watching her.

* I'm not sure: Wiki calls it her debut EP yet I see evidence on RYM of three previous albums. Go figure, huh?

I always find it a bit weird to come across a country artist who isn't American. After all, it seems like America invented country music, and they probably did, so to hear a Canadian or Australian singer shakes that somewhat. Of course, there's Irish country, but nobody wants to talk about that, and with good reason. Australia is, or was, one of the great unknown frontiers though, so I guess the Aussies have as much right to be singing country as the Americans, and it's certainly believable. I like how this kicks off, and there's some Americana in the second track, sense of The Gaslight Anthem or something about “Back in '92”. Looking down the track list I see contributions from two other Australian acts, one of which I wasn't impressed with (The McClymonts) and one of which I definitely was (Kasey Chambers) and so far this certainly seems to be “proper” country, ie not country pop, which is good at least.

This being his, well, twenty-fifth anniversary, there are a few references to his debut album, with the already-mentioned “Back in '92” (he released his first album in that year) and “Outback Club Reunion” (The Outback Club being the title of that debut album), so a lot of memories and a sense of accomplishment, given that he's had over thirty number one hits on the Australian country music charts and sold over two million albums there. A lot to be proud of, for sure. I've no problem with any of this music. Not sure if I'd be a fan, per se, but certainly like it a lot.
