I'd like to spend my life in your mom's core.

The very premise of this thread is something I've been struggling with for ages, I crave the thrill of music that bathes in extremities but then once it is all soaked into your mind, where do you go from there?

I've spent so much time looking for the most extreme and mind bending music over the years that the answer to that question has been sort of surprising to myself. I've simply developed more of an appreciation of more traditional ideas of good songwriting and more traditionally accepted performance styles. When I felt like I'd seen (roughly) all there was to see out there, in terms of the major genres and offshoots, I'd simply go back to the less abrasive and offbeat approaches to music.

It took me a very long detour to figure out that what I liked best was melodic, harmonious music with clear and concise structures. It's not like I didn't get anything out of all that exploration - I learned a lot and my appreciation for melody, etc. is much more nuanced now.

I still check out all sorts of weird things, but I've come to terms with the fact that I'm just not that interested in sound manipulation, sampling, abrasive noises, ambience and rambling, floaty structures.

I wouldn't say I'm a traditionalist to the degree that I don't accept things that break those boundaries as real music - and I can defintetely appreciate some music that does go against old fashioned ideas of what good music is. But I do absolutely without a doubt prefer a more traditional idea of what good composition, singing, instrumental performance, etcetera is.

I hope it's clear what I mean by traditional ideas of what good music is vs more modern ideas that challenge the former. Harmony vs disharmony, structured vs unstructured, trained singing vs off pitch moaning, etc.

I just like what I like. Some **** gets old after a while, but I really don't seek anything based on how unconventional or poppy it is. I don't like music based on novelty. I just enjoy what I enjoy. I typically dig darker stuff but just because a song is dark doesn't mean I will like it. Just because a song isn't dark doesn't mean I won't like it.

Either way, did you check out that song?

Lucem, you're right, it's silly to talk about what I would or wouldn't do IRL. Glad you brought it up. Maybe you should write an instrumental about it. I recommend a piano paired with a clarinet. With ambient sounds of you hanging from your shower curtain you ****ing failure.

Art Is Dead. Buy My ****.

Yeah I did. It wasn't anything too mind shattering, but it was somewhat unusual compared to whatever other hip hop I've heard. Not really my type of thing, but I did like it a little.
I definitely think that there's a lot more interesting music to find underground that among the more famous artists when it comes to that genre. I don't really feel the appeal of the most praised artists either. Kendrick Lamar, for example. I'm sure he's very talented and all, but his music doesn't mean anything to me.

For the last month I've been mostly listening to singer-songwriter records and pretty easy going vocal jazz. Plus some borderline adult-contemporary music like Carly Simon and Julia Fordham.

I'm quite familiar with all sorts of other genres, but do I listen to noise, ambient, progressive rock, experimental, free jazz, or other weird things like that on a regular basis? Unlike seemingly everyone else in here, nope.
Yacht Rock
Smooooooove Jazz
RIO / Zeuhl / Avant-rock
Progressive Rock / Metal / Electronica
Metal from at least three or four other subgenres
Drone / Noise / whatever the ****
Outsider Music (The Residents, Hasil Adkins, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, a few others)

And that's just me over the last seven days. Next week I'm probably gonna dive back into the blues. Or see if any non-****ty hardcore came out in 2017. Who knows?

Most of MB's longtime members aren't broadcasting everything they're listening to all the time, so don't underestimate 'em. That includes Frownland.

If you want to be challenged or surprised, the easiest thing to do is ask yourself "is there an era, genre, etc. that I have dismissed at some point in my life?" Almost everyone has done that at one point or another. It's not always about what music is most challenging or abrasive in a compositional sense.

I could start going the full mile with something I've only been dabbling in recently by really digging into traditional music from around the world's non-English speaking countries.

I try not to dismiss genres, but opera (as hinted before) and country are not the genres I last the longest with when trying to give artists a chance.

I find this song as challenging as it is hilarious.
