3 Questions About Music
Since this is my 1000th post (my proudest achievement yet in life), I figured it ought to be an attempt at saying something constructive. So here's a few questions. Answer 1 or more as you please.
(1) Is there an artist whose music you appreciate that you are convinced not a single person on MB has ever heard about? (2) Are there any songs that nearly move you to tears every time you hear them? (3) What are some songs where you feel like the singer(s) pulls off an exceptionally amazing performance? Subjectively speaking, not necessarily in terms of technique or range, although it can also be for that exact reason. (4) What are some songs where you feel like the singer(s) pulls off an exceptionally BORING performance? Subjectively speaking, not necessarily in terms of technique or range, although it can also be for that exact reason. Ok so that ended up being 4 questions, but whatever. |

The guy is Kyle Motl. I saw a performance of his where he carried the lifeless and uninventive saxophonist and he really earned my respect there. This band's neat too Quote:

And as far as performances go, this is probably one of the greatest vocal live displays of all time. Quote:

(1) Is there an artist whose music you appreciate that you are convinced not a single person on MB has ever heard about?
Probably someone like Elis Regina, since in all the time I've been on MB one thing that's been consistent is that people pay almost no attention at all to music from South or Central America. (2) Are there any songs that nearly move you to tears every time you hear them? Sure. Believe it or not, the song "When I Grow Up" from the cast recording of the musical Matilda chokes me up every single time I hear it for some reason. (3) What are some songs where you feel like the singer(s) pulls off an exceptionally amazing performance? Subjectively speaking, not necessarily in terms of technique or range, although it can also be for that exact reason. "Papaoutai" by Stromae. His vocals in this song hit me on an emotional level that is truly gut wrenching. The fact that I don't understand French yet am still affected this way tells me it's just something pure and emotionally raw in his delivery that does it. (4) What are some songs where you feel like the singer(s) pulls off an exceptionally BORING performance? Subjectively speaking, not necessarily in terms of technique or range, although it can also be for that exact reason. "Tuff Enuff" by The Fabulous Thunderbirds. This song is pure blooz rock cheese through and through but the singer's boring ass, trying-too-hard-to-sound-tuff vocals really push it over the top in worst song ever territory. |

who had such a tragic life and died way too young. I have DVDs of her performing that bring big tears to my eyes every time I watch them. I think of what might have been... |

Before I answer the questions myself, I just wan't to say that I'm hearing some really good things here.
I especially can't believe that I hadn't even bothered to hear anyhting from Jeff Buckley properly before. Brilliant stuff! I also thoroughly enjoyed the random Parrilla de Jerez track I found. (1) Is there an artist whose music you appreciate that you are convinced not a single person on MB has ever heard about? Marialy Pacheco, a pianist from Germany. I bumped into this EPK promo for her new album and I knew right away that I simply had to hear it! It's really good, by the way. (2) Are there any songs that nearly move you to tears every time you hear them? Oh boy, there's a lot of these. Several of them are Tori Amos songs. I can totally understand how she might be seen as too corny to be emotionally involving, but my tearducts can't control themselves near her most beautiful songs. Tori Amos - Winter And this song by Joanna Newsom is simply gorgeous. Joanna Newsom - Divers (Can I also just point out how amazingly crafted this music video is? Just great.) And how could I forget... Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing And so on...: Tori Amos - Weatherman Tori Amos - The Beekeeper Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk Kate Bush - Mother Stands for Comfort Dir En Grey - Vanitas + that theme piece from Platoon. It bothers me when it's used in memes, because it honestly does move me. Etc., etc., etc.... I need professional help. (3) What are some songs where you feel like the singer(s) pulls off an exceptionally amazing performance? Subjectively speaking, not necessarily in terms of technique or range, although it can also be for that exact reason. By the time Dir En Grey put out their so far newest album back in 2014, I'd heard all of their many previous albums, but I'd never heard Kyo sing like this before. It's like he's added a whole extra octave to his voice and I love the way he does it. In general, you can really hear he's been practicing a lot between this and the previous album. I ****ing adore this song (and album for that matter)! Dir En Grey - 懐春 (4) What are some songs where you feel like the singer(s) pulls off an exceptionally BORING performance? Subjectively speaking, not necessarily in terms of technique or range, although it can also be for that exact reason. Randy Blythe from Lamb of God is just an incredibly dull vocalist. Redneck is a terrible song, made 10x more terrible by the ½ dimensional vocal approach of mr. Blythe. I don't know if he's more boring than Chad Kroeger, but he's at the very least equal.
