I hate reading, actually. Well, sort of. I mean, The Ace Attorney trilogy is one of my favourite series of ''games'', but in them It is only dialogue and small boxes of text at a time. I can't handle long blocks of text with tons of detailed descriptions and difficult words. It's hard to pay attention as it feels cluttered to my eyes and I keep reading and then I forget what I just read so I have to re-read it again and then I accidentally skip forwards and have to go back again and AH MY ATTENTION SPAN FOR READING IS AWFUL. Even if I love the story, I just hate the act of reading long blocks of text, it drains me. So I've been procrastinating trying an audiobook for years. Well, I did listen to the short story I have no Mouth and I Must Scream, that was nice.
The irony in this is that I love writing walls of text on video games. What makes it even more ironic is that my spelling and grammar is awful, yet I keep writing walls of text. |

Could be dyslexia, but it's probably just that you need a good 2 weeks alone in a log cabin in the woods. Like writers do in movies. Just make sure it's not some creepy place with ghosts, monsters or killers lurking by the nearby lake.
That ought to get your brain to quiet down. I find that my own overuse of the internet ruins my attention span, but it really helps to stay away from screens for a day now and then. Even just half a day. |

I have serious trouble maintaining my attention span when reading books these days, so comics are the perfect solution. They're easier to read, have pretty pictures, and depending on what you're reading you can basically start or stop anywhere.

This is what I thought: minimal reading, action pictures, engaging (usually) storylines - like reading a book without (as Dylstew would see it) putting in all that effort.

A few years ago I tried that but it ended up being even worse than regular books. I couldn't maintain concentration for **** so I was constantly rewinding until I just gave up.

I think the thing about audiobooks is that it often depends (for me, anyway) on who's reading it. If you don't like the person's voice then it's hard to really enjoy the book. I must admit though, Kindle has revolutionised the way I read now, and allowed me to read more frequently. Waiting for a prescription down in the chemist, sat down and read a little more (well, re-read) of Dracula. Cool.
If it's an attention thing with Dylstew though, I doubt audiobooks will help, as you still need to be able to concentrate and follow what's being said. The ideal solution, which Karen and I hit upon, is for me to read out the book. My rates are ten Euro an hour and all the biscuits I can eat, plus travel expenses and, if required, accommodation, though I can if necessary sleep under your bed...
