Best outro?
What is the best outro/ending to a song that you have ever heard?
My favourite is the very beautiful outro to the anarcho-punk/Oi band Karma Sutra's song "Masters and Slaves" from the album "The Daydreams of a Production Line Worker". Unfortunately I'm too new here to be allowed to post a link. But it can be found on Youtube (It's otherwise quite hard to find). It starts at 2.51 and in contrast to the chaotic song its even more beautiful. You can stop listening at 3.41 before the screams :P |

In any list of outros, The Boxer by Simon & Garfunkel deserves a mention. If by some remote chance you haven't heard it, you should do yourself that favour before reading any furthur.
Most people know it so well, it doesn't need a link. Either you have been blown away by the lie-la-lie crescendo, or, like critic Ian MacDonald, you think it's "needlessly inflated and protracted." Here's a couple of other outros which may not be the best, but imo they have one thing in common - they are the best bit of the song they're attached to:- Satellite of Love by Lou Reed at last some brass: Dead End Street by The Kinks at last some brass #2: Sunshine Girl by Can

While I love The Boxer, I always thought that outro was overdone. Though the part at the very end where they calm it down is nice. Cut the outro in about half and it would be just about right.
A similar song would be Hey Jude, but in that case it seems to work better because all they're doing is jamming and it's got more of a "fun" atmosphere to it.

Here's a few of my favourites
This has been one of my favourite album closers since I first heard it back in 2010. It just so perfectly encapsulates the album and the band. This song is like an outro inception. The first 2 and a half minutes are kind of meh but then it just becomes awesome has the best outro for a song, album, and band. |

Liars—"This Dust Makes That Mud"
First of all, it's just a great song overall. Then it slowly unravels into this spacey kind of freakout and around the eight minute mark it subtly slips into just a hypnotic loop, repeating over and over and over for the next 22 minutes. This makes it this weird kind of infinite outro that dares you to be the one to hit stop. If you don't, and you listen to the entire track, you'll hear that in the final seconds the loop slows until it grinds to a halt. |
