Do distortion guitars really sound all that heavy/abrasive/raw/whatever?
I love abrasive music with happy chords and melodies, yet whenever I let my parents hear they act asif I'm listening to slayer instead of poppy crack rock steady songs just because it has a distorion guitar. Even the poppiest of **** they think is too much. Even when I pick a song with distortion guitars that sound beautiful instead of aggressive and no vocals, they still think it's music from the devil or some ****. This makes no sense to me because I never really found distortion guitars to be all that abrasive anyways. Sure I love them but they just have really nice textures. I've found free/avant garde jazz more abrasive than any rock related track I've listened to but that may be because I never listen to it. Point is, other instruments can be abrasive to the ears as well when used right.
I also always hear people say they can't get into a band because of distorted/screamed vocals, never thick distortion guitars. Are there really a huge chunk of people who can't even handle the distortion guitars of the poppiest of pop punk? That **** was mainstream in the 2000's. |

I think the trumpet and the harmonica are the two most skull rattling instruments. Distortion softens the guitar sound. Solid state more than tube.

People are ****ing idiots. Don't be concerned with what they think. Be concerned with what you, as a person, think.

I disagree. Turn to authority until you're ready.

This depends on the person. Some people will say yes cause they didn't grow up with very much distorted guitar in the music. I'd say no on the other hand.
That said when you play metal without distortion it sounds like surf music with more Satanic personality. Meaning it's still heavy. |
