I still maintain that alternative is nothing but bashful pop music.

When I think of Alternative music, I think of bands like Audioslave, Stained, and Cake.

I listed "indie rock"/indie folk earlier in the thread since I was having trouble succinctly describing what exactly I was referring to but yeah, it really is too broad of a term seeing as it's not a genre. I LOVE Low and Tall Dwarfs and Mount Eerie and numerous bands that would fall under the general umbrella of indie. I was referring more to that specific kind of tepid and bland alternative jangly pop-rock that sounds like a mish-mash of everything you've ever heard in college town cafes or CW shows (not that I would know anything about CW shows of course). As well as most stuff you'd find in the most popular nondescript Spotify "Indie Chill" type playlists. There is certainly more boring music out there, though. Like the entire new-age genre, probably, as well as popular radio country.

This is true, too. It's useful when discussing music with regular people who otherwise may have no clue what you're talking about during polite music-related small-talk. If someone asks me what my favorite kind of music is, (while they're eating potato chips and clearly only half-listening) I can't go off on a tangent about all of my favorite ambient sub-genres or whatever; I have to instead say "I like Silent Hill type music" etc. And then they nod and change the subject. With those people, indie is its own genre, and I know that when they say they like indie music, they mean stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel, Mumford & Sons and The Black Keys etc etc.

I always think I can handle this question, then I have to explain what experimental music is by fumbling through subgenres they've never heard of and yammering in a language they don't understand until I just say "weird stuff" and shrug my shoulders.

Did you see my post before I edited it like 3 seconds later? I took out Creed because of the religious aspect. Or are we just on the same page?

Yes, I saw the edit and was upset at your exclusion of Creed, which was obviously driven by your amoral atheist tendencies. I won't have that on my forum.

The worst is when, after you say "weird stuff" their eyes light up and they say something like "Ohh so liiike Alt-J and stuff like that?" and then you have to disappoint them yet again.

Alt-J's first album is one of my favorites of the last six or seven years but I would have set that person straight as well. Their last two albums sucked but I'll always have my guilty pleasure in An Awesome Wave.

Frownland 06-27-2017 11:01 AM

The game is already lost when they ask what experimental music is.

Well the problem is more just a dramatically different idea of what "weird" entails (in the eyes of these people) which can make, say, attempting to choose music for a long car ride a bit difficult. They'll happily crow, "I'm in the mood for something weird! What do you have?" (or something equally vague) and then you must gauge what precisely they mean by that.

Also Björk and Tool.
Although that answer might be from ten years ago, when I still used to talk to people about music and nowadays some indie crap is the go-to 'weird stuff' for wannabe noobs.

Exo 06-27-2017 12:48 PM

To be fair, Bjork is pretty weird. More the person though.

Frownland 06-27-2017 12:54 PM

I've had someone bring up Primus before and that led to a fruitful education on The Residents and that particular friend ended up seeing them with me. So it's not always an exercise in futility.

Bjork is one of those gateway artists, I think. Just the right amount of kookiness for young people (especially if they were an angsty teen girl in the early 2000s) to tolerate and enjoy before they inevitably go on to more experimental and dissonant stuff.

Lol. I still need to listen to that album. I'll do one of my reviews/play by play in my journal for it later. Should be an interesting experience.

Gonna have to agree with this one.

I'm also growing very tired of the endless wave of Sabbath-clone Stoner Rock bands, similar to when I burnt myself out on the thrash revival of the late 2000s. There was a time when I ate it right up, but after beating it to death for a while it has become quite annoying having to sift through literally hundreds of these bands before finding a single band where the tag "Blues Rock" is actually accurate.

Nah, the worst is when you say metal and they make a godforsaken impression involving wild, uncoordinated hand motions that may or may not be air guitar/drumming, combined with with a "RAWR!" noise that no metal band besides Gwar would ever record for people to hear. I assume the person is half-remembering a Slipknot song they heard once at some point in the early 00's. This is one of the few times I ever want to punch someone who has in no way wronged me.

I think there's a lot of room for this to be great, but it is seriously bogged down by the slightly heavier than usual blues rock you describe.

Ugggghhhhhhhh I ****ing hate this with all of my life. Just thinking of what pops up into people's heads when you tell them you like metal makes me sad.

It's almost worse with jazz because when you say that you like jazz, people usually think you like some weak ass Kenny G ****. Nah son, the jazz I listen to will make your momma cry.

It's especially sad when they try to relate to you by telling you about how they saw Tool in concert once or whatever.

Yep. Same goes for when you say you like electronic music and they think you mean cheeseball club music.

Definitely this as well. It'd make more sense as a response to techno, but even then it's still pretty off the mark.

This is your forum now? When was the coup? How did you seize power? Is Yac ok? I don't mind, I'd just like some time to liquidate some assets and get in touch with my brokers in Zurich before you enact any sweeping reforms. Can you give me twenty-four hours?

Or "Oh, like Iron Maiden or Motorhead?"
If you're lucky.

Add another to the pile: nu-country or whatever the **** the likes of Garth Brooks, Nathan Carter and Randy Travis sing. Jesus.

Well Bob was ****ing amazing on the guitar, Rico was an adequate replacement for Chuck, and Randy was amazing at first but fizzled out about halfway through and became tiresome at points, and that's really unfortunate because Shadowland is basically a Randy showcase. Great visual display and I had a great time, but I wish I had seen them on an earlier tour (like the one that was in walking distance of my house but I was too young for the venue).

Lot of weirdos there too. I saw Marc Maron.

I saw the name and was like, "I ****ing know that name but can't place it," so I Googled it and realized he was in Glow, the show I just marathoned over the last two days. Small world.

Frownland 06-27-2017 09:49 PM

Not really. The show was in LA. He lives in LA. I lived close to LA. I went to that show. I ****post on the same forum as you. The world isn't small you dumb ****.

Then you must mention Marc Maron a lot. Like, you probably want him to **** you in the ass and won't shut up about it, or else it's still a coincidence since I don't even know if I'd heard of him till two days ago.

Frownland 06-27-2017 10:23 PM

He has another Louie/Seinfeld-styled show where it's like his stand up but based around his life and he's done stand up for a while. Quit being a basic human with all your biases and ****.

I didn't even know he was a comedian, but he was funny and classless as **** in Glow so I'm interested.

Sounds interesting, I wonder what the new tour is like (with the new incarnations, with "Tyrone" on vocals).

To be fair with the Randy/Chuck/Bob trilogy, Randy was always the focus of that era/incarnation, he even had his own vlog-style web series!

Spectralmusic 06-28-2017 03:19 AM

I'm probably walking on eggshells with this one, but the only thing that can save this song is a brilliant mashup like this:

That song, is almost an amalgamation of this things that I don't like about Maiden (I still love many of their albums, but still)

Also, bonus mashup:

I watched one of his stand up specials and it was horribly unfunny. It was seriously like Dane Cook levels of unfunniness.

Chiomara 06-28-2017 06:39 AM

^ Still though, Bat, you may like his show (it used to be on netflix, not sure if it still is) or his podcast. I haven't heard much of the latter but his show is very awkward and doom-filled, (though not nearly as good as Louie) if that appeals to you. He has a really endearing quality to him.

Frownland 06-28-2017 06:55 AM

I've seen a bit of his standup and it's pretty much snarky ranting. Dane Cook wishes he was that full of himself.

Agreed with Chio that the show is good, mostly because of the naturalist vibe he lifted from Louie.

Janszoon 07-05-2017 04:48 PM

I've thought some more about this and I'm starting to think maybe the most boring music genre is whatever you call the genre of marching band music that includes national anthems, old school football game music, and other assorted peppy ceremonial stuff. It's really, really terrible.

Christian rock is still pretty awful though.

I guess the common thread for me is music whose primary purpose doesn't actually have anything to do with being good music.

I think that can be expanded to brass bands in general. It's the instrumentation that does it more than anything, although the typical marching band member being school-aged plays into it as well with the less developed skillset.

Just shout whenever, and I'll be there
You are my love, you are my heart
And we would never ever ever be apart

Are we an item? Lord, quit playing
We're not just friends, what are you saying?
Say there's another and look right in my eyes
My first love broke my heart for the first time
And I was like...

Jesus jesus jesus ooohhh
like jesus jesus jesus ooohhhh
like jesus jesus jesus ohhhh
I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

Oh, for you I would have done whatever
And I just can't believe we ain't together
And I wanna play it cool, but I'm losin' you
I'll buy you anything, I'll buy you any ring
And I'm in pieces, baby fix me
And just shake me 'til you wake me from this bad dream
I'm going down, down, down, down
And I just can't believe my first love won't be around

Jesus jesus jesus ooohhh
like jesus jesus jesus ooohhhh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

[Ludacris:]
Luda! When I was 13, I had my first love,
There was nobody that compared to my savior
And nobody came between us or could ever come above
God had me going crazy, oh, I was star-struck,
God woke me up daily, don't need no Islam.
God made my heart pound, it skipped a beat when I see her in the street and
At school on the playground but I really wanna see Jesus on the weekend.
God knows he's got me dazing cause she was so amazing
And now my heart is breaking but I just keep on saying...

Jesus jesus jesus ooohhh

like jesus jesus jesus ohhhh
I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

I'm gone (Yeah Yeah Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeah)
Now I'm all gone (Yeah Yeah Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeah)
Now I'm all gone (Yeah Yeah Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeah)
Now I'm all gone (gone, gone, gone...)
I'm gone

That abomination isn't too far off from what actual commercial christian worship music is actually like
