Kind of ironic title for the thread given that his eyes were apparently closed! Unique approach, probably some sort of prodigy/aberration though. I doubt anyone else could do that.

I've heard it's standard practice for many of the teachers at Moscow Conservatory to get their students to practice in the dark - not all the time but some of the time. You get less caught up with what you are doing technically and have more space to feel the music. Back to the OP's question, yes this is quite normal, you will see it happen more with people who have grown up with a lot of music.
