I remember Bison being a pretty cool punky thrash band, but I don't know anything about them switching to sludge.

I'm going to disagree. Bison are most certainly not "punky" or "thrash"

How many albums have you listened to? And it's been a few years since I last listened to them, so I might be misremembering, but I don't remember them sounding a whole lot like Mastodon.

I should have prefaced it with "early" Mastodon, Leviathan, Remission, Lifesblood era. I have only listened to the first two albums. The second one was last year around September though so maybe I'm not remembering right.

First time I heard the band in a good long while, but yeah they definitely sound like early Mastodon with a heavy thrash influence. Carry on.
