Drove downtown in the rain, 9:30 on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late night record shop
Call it compulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane
But when I'm surrounded I just can't stop
It's a matter of instinct, it's a matter of conditioning, a matter of fact
You can call me Pavlov's dog
Ring a bell and I'll salivate, how'd you like that?
Dr. Landy, tell me you're not just a pedagogue...

Well i'm grinding my life out, steady and sure,
Nothing's more wretched than what I must endure,
I'm drenched in the light that shines from the sun,
I could stone you to death for the wrongs that you've done,
Sooner or later you'll make a mistake,
I'll put you in a chain that you never will break,
Legs and arms, and bodies and bone,
I pay in blood...but not my own.

It's your bicycle bells and your Rembrandt swells
Your children alive and still breathing
And your look of loss when you're coming across
Makes me feel like a thief when you're bleeding

Duchess Duchess
Light up your candles for me
Duchess Duchess
Put all your love back in me
I come listening I touch touching

With the Persian sea running through your veins
You shed your names with the seasons
Still they all return with the last remains
And they lay them before you like reasons

With your shimmering dress it says no it says yes
It says I've nothing left for concealing
Its your shiftless flesh and your old girl's grace
Its your young girl's face that I'm breathing

Duchess Duchess
Light up your candles for me
Duchess Duchess Duchess
Put all the love back in me

Like the dust that settles all around me,
I must find a new home.
The ways and holes that used to give me shelter,
Are all as one to me now.
But I, I would search everywhere
Just to hear your call,
And walk upon stranger roads than this one
In a world I used to know before.
I miss you more.
Than the sun reflecting off my pillow,
Bringing the warmth of new life.
And the sounds that echoed all around me,
I caught a glimpse of in the night.
But now, now I've lost everything,
I give to you my soul.
The meaning of all that I believed before
Escapes me in this world of none, no thing, no one.
And I would search everywhere
Just to hear your call,
And walk upon stranger roads than this one
In a world I used to know before.
For now I've lost everything,
I give to you my soul.
The meaning of all that I believed before
Escapes me in this world of none,
I miss you more.

My love I am the speed of sound
I left them motherless, fatherless
Their souls dangling inside-out from their mouths
But it's never enough
I want you

I carved your name across three counties
And ground it in with bloody hides
Broken necks will line the ditch
Till you "stop it! stop it! stop this madness! "
I want you

I have waited with a glacier's patience
Smashed every transformer with every trailer
Till nothing was standing
Sixty-five miles wide

But still you are nowhere, still you are nowhere, nowhere in sight
Come out to meet me, run out to meet me
Come into the light

Climb the boxcars to the engine
Through the smoke and to the sky

Your rails could always outrun mine so I
I picked them up and crashed them down
In a moment close to now
Cause I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss
How you'd sigh yourself to sleep
When I'd rake the springtime across your sheets

My love, I'm an owl on the sill in the evening
But morning finds you
Still warm and breathing
This tornado loves you, what will make you believe me?

Yes, as most people are posting, I'd expect the lyrics here to look good on paper without the music to back them up. It's not always easy to separate the two though. For instance, who can possibly read these lyrics without thinking of the song?

My grandma and your grandma were
Sit-tin' by the fire. - My grandma told
Your grandma "I'm gonna set your flag on fire."

Talk-in' 'bout Hey now ! Hey now ! I-ko, I-ko, un-day
Jock-a-mo fee-no ai na-né, jock-a-mo fee na-né

^ To complicate matters, these lyrics are not only ridiculously cool, they are also ridiculous and cool.
"Talkin' 'bout Hey now!"
