Zack Hill - Face Tat
Not being all that familiar with Hill before spending time with Face Tat, I'm pleased to report I'll be looking more into his various recorded stints since this is a strange but quite compelling-in-places record. To these ears, he's drawing more on No Wave, Zeuhl and the Japanese noise rock scene than, say, Zappa or Beefheart, but that doesn't change the fact that whatever you want to call it or compare it too...still very well done. Moments that stand out to me include the skittering groove of 'The Primitives Talk', which comes off as a more neurotic take on the Talking Heads than anything else, and the distorted yet melodious 'Burner In The Video'. The sheer chaos that defines this album isn't a game changer for me or anything like that (especially since there's always a weirder fish out there, e.g. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and countless others), but I can see how this appeals to the Pitchfork crowd. I give it a strong 7.5 out of 10.
