This week is going to be epic shit talk.. If it's any consolation Batlord told me he has been needing a reason to listen to MSI after I played a song in plug, so it's really his fault.

I love MSI, I used to listen to them back in early 00s.

This is going to be a great week. I just started it.

Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy by Mindless Self Indulgence

I've heard this record before and like it.

Some bands blur genres by flipping from one thing to the next but this takes hip hop industrial funk punk and throws it all in your face at the same time with sincere juvenile joy. Like what if Ministry knew how to have fun? Post-modern creativity done in the purest spirit of rock'n'roll. Fun. Chuck Berry fun that refuses to be fenced in. Lyrically unrestrained. The music Oingo Boingo fans pretended they were listening to. 8/10.

Mindless Self Indulgence
Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy

I've listened to this twice. Here we go...

I love the first 20-25 minutes of this album. Absolutely love it. Manic, chaotic, funky, energetic, weird and somehow it's built on a foundation of pop-punk. Kinda sounds like Death Grips and Franz Ferdinand hate fucking each other. I liked the variety of singing and rapping, the hip hop beats, the splashes of electronics. It manages to be both experimental and fun, which is something exceedingly rare to hear.

After that first half of so, it started to wear on me and I wasn't enjoying it nearly as much. I can't point to a specific song, but somewhere around the 40 minute mark or so, I was hoping this would wrap up. The songs started to slow down and lose their energy. My main complaint would be I think this album is about 5-8 minutes too long. Either it become stale for me, or MSI ran out of gas and I think it's for latter since I still loved the first half on my second listen.

Frankenstein Girls is a tonne of fun, I just wish this party had the lights turned on a bit sooner.

7/10

I'm not even going to bother with the matrix on this one. This was, hands down, the worst album I have heard here in this club, and possibly ever. Even OLD was better than this. It was juvenile to the max (even more than OLD) - singing "***got ***got ***got"? Real mature guys! It had no redeeming qualities for me, nothing I could pick out and more to the point it had THIRTY ****ING TRACKS! I know most of them were a minute or two at best, but when the music is this bad, that's too long. The band name is very apt because that's exactly what this is, on every level. If I could rate it lower than a Hate I would. By the time I'd suffered to track 15 and realised there was just as much yet to come, I turned the volume down and just let it play out. I was this close from just stopping listening altogether.

Absolutely awful. 0/10
I've been using a 1-10 rating system. If we're using 0-10, I'll go back and adjust my last rating.

Mindless Self Indulgence - Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy

1. What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in?

I thought it was gonna be a live album at first, which would have been a let down judging by the sound of it. But then it kicks in and I like what I hear.

2. What did you think of the opening track?

Good stuff. Electrophonic Tonic compared them to Death Grips and Franz Ferdinand, but I'd say it's closer to Limp Bizkit crossed with a bit of Idiot Flesh, with somebody like Satanicpornocultshop mashing them together.

3. What did you think of the next track?

I don't remember the second track specifically but I liked the majority of the opening tracks.

4. Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions? (see note 1)

Yeah he was fine.

5. Did the music (only) generally appeal to you, or not? (see note 2)

For sure. I like the manic vibe. It mixes a lot of styles I enjoy.

6. Did the album get better or worse as you listened to it (first time)?

Golden I is the start of a dim in quality. The album starts to slow down a little bit after that.

7. What did you think of the lyrical content?

No thoughts. Not listened enough to really comment.

8. Did you like the instrumental parts?

I don't remember too many instrumental parts but I did enjoy the music.

9. What did you think of the production?

Fine.

10. Did you know of this artiste prior to listening to the album, and if so, did that foreknowledge colour your perception of this album?

I have heard of them but do not recall ever listening to a full album. I thought they were more in the emo genre than this for some reason.

11. Is this, generally, the kind of music you listen to or not?

Not recently, but I used to listen to a lot more stuff like this. And I'd have loved it in my early teens.

13. What would you class as your favourite track, if you have one?

I'd lump the first 6/7 into one. Great stuff.

14. And the one you liked least?

Golden I or

16. Are you now looking forward to hearing more from this artiste, if you have not heard any of their other material?

Definitely.

17. Were you surprised by your reaction - positive or negative - to the album?

Not after reading some of the reviews.

18. Did the album end well?

It actually kicks back into gear towards the end. Some good tracks for sure.

19. Do you see any way the album could have been improved?

Cut the waste.

20. Do you think the album hung together well, ie was a fully cohesive unit, or was it a bit hit-and-miss?

I think it did. Similar sounds running throughout, and even the dips were united together.

Rating: 7.5/10

this album kinda feels like linkin park and serj tankian made a baby. should be a bad thing but idk, kinda feeling it.

edit -

alright so this had a lot of positive moments where i found myself enjoying the silliness of the music, but i also found it to be too heavy on the gimmick and it lost it's flair about 1/3rd of the way through the track list. all in all it wasn't a bad album and it's something i didn't mind listening to, even it was kind of a novelty thing.

5/10

I'm going to try and do this quickly.

Mindless Self Indulgence - Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy

The Review

After reading trollheart's review I was worried. Then after reading the more positive reviews, I was less worried. But now that it's all over I can tell you that this album is not something I will be going back to. The manic nature of the instrumentation and electronics mixed with the chaotic vocal delivery is strangely alluring. I enjoyed a few tracks because of this. However, the shock value wears off quite quickly as we approach tracks 13 and 14. I just lost interest right there. The energy seemed to go away and it never came back. The lyrics on this thing are god awful, childish and lackluster. I felt that the ideas and concepts are there for something cool, however they did not come together in a nice way. I felt that the overall production was fine, so at least that wasn't a negative per se. The album is too long as well. I mean not in time passed, but in overall track numbers. You can't keep doing the same thing for 30 tracks and expect it to stick. When a new song comes on you want it to be different enough so you recognize it later down the road as its own entity. None of these songs do that for me though.

Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy gets a 3.9/10

Listening to the Mindless Self Indulgence album now, and it feels completely and utterly pointless. Whatever interesting influences might be going on are completely lost in a blur of random **** that leaves absolutely no impression. No tunes, no fun, no nothing, just boring ****. I guess I'll give it more of a chance, but this is wildly disappointing squared.
