1. What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in?
Noisy, grating grindcore with juvenile humor.

2. What did you think of the opening track?
Not much.

3. What did you think of the next track?
Not much better.

4. Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions?
Didn't care for the vocalist but I was expecting that going into this album.

5. Did the music (only) generally appeal to you, or not?
Not generally, though there were some interesting bits here and there.

6. Did the album get better or worse as you listened to it?
Got a bit better but not by much.

7. What did you think of the lyrical content?
A lot of it was unintelligible but what I could understand was usually over-the-top and off-the-cliff type juvenile humor.

8. Did you like the instrumental parts?
Some were OK and some didn't do anything for me musically. Some of the guitar parts reminded me a bit of Eddie Van Halen in a weird sort of way.

9. What did you think of the production?
Pretty much what I was expecting.

10. Did you know of this artiste prior to listening to the album, and if so, did that foreknowledge colour your perception of this album?
Never heard of them before this. The album sticker "Insane Mega-Speed Thrash with Crazy Vocals" sums it up quite well.

11. Is this, generally, the kind of music you listen to or not?
No. Really don't have any interest in the genre.

12. Assuming you listened to the album more than once, on repeated listens, did you find you liked the album more, or less?
Tried listening twice but gave up after 1 & 1/3 listens.

13. What would you class as your favourite track, if you have one?
Maybe the last track "Screaming Geezer."

14. And the one you liked least?
Maybe the opening track "Total Hag" but I thought they were all rather awful.

15. If the album in question is a debut, did that fact allow it, in your mind, any leeway, and if so, was that decision justified or vindicated?
Didn't make any difference to me.

16. Are you now looking forward to hearing more from this artiste, if you have not heard any of their other material?
Probably won't bother seeking out any more from this band. Didn't care for the album and don't care for the genre.

17. Were you surprised by your reaction - positive or negative - to the album?
It was what I was expecting, so no.

18. Did the album end well?
The last track was the one I picked as a favorite, so I guess it ended well.

19. Do you see any way the album could have been improved?
An album like this is probably best left as is.

20. Do you think the album hung together well, ie was a fully cohesive unit, or was it a bit hit-and-miss?
I thought it was almost unlistenable but, for what it is, I thought it held together well.

3/10

Review:

My main complaint with grindcore happens to be it's monotony. As a metal/punk hybrid genre, it's a one trick pony. This release attempts to break the mold a bit through weird avant-garde bits and wierdo vocals, but just renders it to be an extremely annoying John Zorn wannabe. This record sucks, sorry for the mob mentality OccultHawk, but I'm not a fan.

2.5/5

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.

No worries. To each his own. I mainly wanted to choose something that would be fun to review. Take it or leave it.

I get the Zorn comment probably stemming from Naked City but the Zorn dabbling in grindcore was probably more of an influence the other way. This record is from '88.

I get that but my opinion still stands. If they didn't take the idea from Zorn it came from Bungle's demos mayhaps or perhaps they were original. Either way it's not good.

lol Bungle was the Zorn wannabe in the room watchu on about

I don't think it's that out of the ordinary to do genre blending and would put this down as an original idea for OLD. You're right that Zorn and Bungle really drove the explosion of that idea in the 90s though.

Regardless of any of that I just think it wasn't executed well here.

Old Lady Drivers - OLD (1988)

Initial thoughts include: WTF am I listening to? Why did I join this club? They made music like this in the 80s? Lol, what did he just say? Interesting album to say the least. I really thought I wasn't going to like it, but it was pretty damn entertaining. I gave it 2 listens while I was playing games, and while it didn't have my full attention I caught myself laughing a few times when I heard the whacky lyrics. Instrumentals were solid, and the screaming(?) was pretty good, sounded like the dude was possessed. I think my favorite song was actually Supermarket Monstrosity.. man did that hit home after taking my friend shopping with her kids. Would listen again.

7/10

Gonna listen to this later. Not sure if I'm gonna just give thoughts or go through the template. Both have positive qualities. I hope it's good anyway.
