Feb. 2

Esperanza Spalding - Junjo (2006)
Some sweet sweet Jazz vibes. Piano, drums, and bass is all ya need. My professor recommended her album Chamber Music Society to me a while back, but I wanted to check out her first album before listening to that one, which has a lot more vocals.

Lane 8 - Rise (2015)
Chill electronic/house with some nice vocals. This is one of the better albums in this genre I've listened to in a while. Each track had a unique sound which kept it from getting stale as long as you don't mind the repetition that comes with the genre.

Me'shell NdegéOcello - Plantation Lullabies (1993)
Wow, how have I never heard of her? This was fantastic.. some great soul with funk and hiphop elements.

Feb. 3 - let's get the rest of these recos outta the way

Rosetta Stone - Gender Confusion(1995)
This album title is way ahead of it's time lol. Pretty typical goth sound, I liked it.

The United States of America (1968)
From Frown: Another suggestion that was not what I expected. Lots of variety. There were songs I really didn't like at all because they had very abrasive sounds but they usually switched at some point and mellowed out which was kind of a saving grace. I liked the super chill songs like Cloud Song and Stranded in Time the most.

Arkangel - Dead Man Walking (1999)
From Batlord: I liked it. They really didn't sound comparable to ABR to my ears, but that doesn't matter. Pretty understandable lyricist which I prefer. High energy all the way through, there were no dull moments or fillers that bored me. Wish it was longer tbh.

They're not comparable cause they're from an entirely different era of metalcore. Sort of like listening to Iron Maiden and comparing it to Slayer. And metalcore from that time period was generally made by hardcore bands basically playing metal, and hardcore bands make 20-30 minute albums sort of as a rule.

Here. Have this. It's somewhat closer to what you're thinking of as metalcore while still being amazing.

Poison the Well - The Opposite of December

Nice. I think that's pretty much the best psychedelic album out there because I've never heard any album that was that much like a straight up acid trip.

USA is one of the few experimental records from the late 60's that is both truly weird and still fairly listenable. You wouldn't hear a track like The American Metaphysical Circus on an oldies station, but it would blend in nicely in a compilation of late 60's psychedelia.

I see that your not taking recs, and I'm pretty sure it's not on Spotify either, but the only other record that I know of that matches and exceeds the level of psychedelic experimentation of USA is Orgasm/Cave Rock by Cromagnon. But the listenability of Cromagnon is just about non-existant. It makes USA sound like I Want to Hold Your Hand.

@Bat - I've actually heard of that band. Never listened though. I'll give it a spin some time.

@Electro - I'll check them out, but I don't have a positive outlook based on your description. It's not that I'm against recs, I just didn't make the thread with the intention of being similar to Love or Hate. It's more of a documentation of my daily journey in music and an opportunity to introduce others to new stuff. It's cool if I post a positive review of an album and someone comes in to say "hey if you liked this you should check out this too".

It's all on youtube if you're interested. It is some of the more genuine weirdo music in existence.

^^ The whole album is an experience, but you can get basically the same shock value out of just listening to the opening track Caladonia. It's sounds like an orgy of no wave, industrial, black metal and bag pipes...

Based on your review of USA, I wouldn't expect you to like or listen to Cromagnon. I was just adding to the fact that even USA isn't the zenith of how weird the late 60's could sound. And, I really like the idea of just a straight-up "I'm listening to stuff and here's what I have to say" approach to this thread. I found it hard enough to review albums in groups here when it was like 1 album every three weeks, let alone being constantly bombarded like Troll's old Love Hate thread.

You do you.
