Quick Question About Medieval Music

Hey all, I've got a final exam essay in my Music Appreciation course in which I need to describe whether or not certain eras of Western music are considered intellectual or emotional. For the most part I know these, but I can't for the life of me figure out which category Medieval falls under. Some help would be appreciated guys.

It's religious expression. Not especially emotional or intellectual but very sincere and beautiful.

I think you'd need to clarify what that means? What's intellectual music? Experimental? Avant-Garde? And then what qualifies as emotional? Surely medieval music could be both, as it would firstly be for the like of the king's entertainment (minstrels) and then also to tell stories of great heroes and/or battles, which would be designed to evoke emotion? Why can't it be both?
