Most versatile band of all time.

Hi people.
What is, in your opinion, the most versatile band of all time?
Some people say it's Queen, others say it's Frank Zappa...
But I think that no band comes even close to Linkin Park in terms of versatility. Now, if you've only listened to the first two records, you might say that I'm crazy... But after "Meteora" they started experimenting a lot, and I mean A LOT.
I'll give you some examples. Listen to these songs:

"War"
"H! Vltg3"
"Pushing Me Away" (2007 Live Version)
"The Messenger"
"The Catalyst"
"Until It's Gone"
"Skin To Bone"
"New Divide"

Just to name a few.
They go from Metal to Hip-Hop, alt. rock, electronica, melodic... But they're best known for mixing all together.
Songs like "Figure. 09" are a perfect example of their earlier nu metal sound. If you listen to these song and don't know it's Linkin Park, you could easily think you're listening to different bands.

Tristan_Geoff 11-02-2016 11:21 AM

What the **** are you going on about?

Frownland 11-02-2016 11:22 AM

The most versatile band is Muse.

Chula Vista 11-02-2016 11:43 AM

I hate that this site won't let you start a post with all caps!

AC/DC

Tristan_Geoff 11-02-2016 11:56 AM

The most versatile band is clearly Metallica.

Hard Rock AND Metal? In the same band? Crazy!

Before I clicked, I saw you posted in here and was thinking: "Please don't post Led Zeppelin, please don't post Led Zeppelin, please don't post Led Zeppelin...", and then I opened the thread and was even more mortified.

That's a good one. hehe

On another note, my daughter just posted "Led Zeppelin!" on bookface. Nothing with it, just "Led Zeppelin!". I think she found Led Zeppelin. Funny, her favorite artist at 8 years old was Jeff Beck.

Let's see if you're right.

War - This surprised me. This is punk rock.
H! Vltg3 - ****ty hip hop
Pushing Me Away (2007 Live Version) - ****ty piano song
The Messenger - ****ty power ballad
The Catalyst - ****ty hard rock
Until It's Gone - decent alt. Rock song
Skin To Bone - also alt rock... though ****ty alt rock.
New Divide - more alt rocrock.

So you said they're more versatile than frank zappa? I don't know his discography well enough to comment so I'll let RYM comment.

So, anyone who does know frank zappa's discog like to comment?

Frownland 11-02-2016 02:22 PM

He's a little more diverse than them I think. Just barely.

Spoiler for Videos:

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-02-2016 02:22 PM

Linkin Park was my favourite band from the age of 8-12

Frank Zappa was one of the most gifted, versatile, and prolific composers/performers of the 20th century. And I'm talking of the entire musical universe.

So you're saying Linkin Park being more versatile is horseshit

Frownland 11-02-2016 02:26 PM

Ja. I'd say that John Zorn is twice as versatile as Zappa though.

Ya might have a point.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-02-2016 02:29 PM

Norg and I have discussed it and we both agree the correct answer is Korn.

Exo 11-02-2016 03:39 PM

The answer is obvious.

Ween.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-02-2016 03:44 PM

I do not disagree with that.

Frownland 11-02-2016 04:05 PM

Ween's tied with Zorn.

Chula Vista 11-02-2016 04:08 PM

I put a lot more thought into this. The correct answer is "Right Said Fred".

I think you'd be correct.

But also consider Ulver.

And an *******.

Mondo Bungle 11-02-2016 07:22 PM

I dunno but I think it's a very special thing when a band can fuse extreme and non extreme genres and have a perfect sounding product.

Rolo Tomassi and the Dillinger Escape Plan and stuff like that.

http://www.shoforum.com/jelloslug/pickme.gifThe first three bands that come to mind as the most versatile are The Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Turtles. If I had to pick just one for who's the most, I would have to go with The Turtles. Hands down one of the most versatile bands ever. They have an album called "Battle of the Bands" to prove their versatility. The album is a gate-fold and you can open it up to see that the twelve bands that are represented in the the credit appear in various dress representing various genres. Interesting fact in case you didn't know, they are all actually members of The Turtles. The Turtles kicks Linkin Park's ass left and right when it comes to versatility. Sorry dude.

Replace it with Naked City and the versatility is still above pretty much everyone else.

Actually Queen is probably the correct answer. Rock, Pop, Metal, Jazz, Blues, Rockabilly, Ragtime, Skiffle, Celtic, Progressive, Anthems, Glam, Gospel, Disco, Opera, Music Hall, and Folk. And they excelled at them all, never sounding artificial or phony.

Except during the times they sounded artificial and phony.

Frownland 11-03-2016 01:15 PM

Uh, metal? Also, no.

Exo 11-03-2016 01:15 PM

Queen is metal? Lol.

The Batlord 11-03-2016 01:24 PM

I thought they were just a show tunes band playing rock?
