I dunno but I think it's a very special thing when a band can fuse extreme and non extreme genres and have a perfect sounding product.

Rolo Tomassi and the Dillinger Escape Plan and stuff like that.

Some people say it's Queen, others say it's Frank Zappa...
But I think that no band comes even close to Linkin Park in terms of versatility. Now, if you've only listened to the first two records, you might say that I'm crazy... But after "Meteora" they started experimenting a lot, and I mean A LOT.
I'll give you some examples. Listen to these songs:

"War"
"H! Vltg3"
"Pushing Me Away" (2007 Live Version)
"The Messenger"
"The Catalyst"
"Until It's Gone"
"Skin To Bone"
"New Divide"

Just to name a few.
They go from Metal to Hip-Hop, alt. rock, electronica, melodic... But they're best known for mixing all together.
Songs like "Figure. 09" are a perfect example of their earlier nu metal sound. If you listen to these song and don't know it's Linkin Park, you could easily think you're listening to different bands.
The first three bands that come to mind as the most versatile are The Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Turtles. If I had to pick just one for who's the most, I would have to go with The Turtles. Hands down one of the most versatile bands ever. They have an album called "Battle of the Bands" to prove their versatility. The album is a gate-fold and you can open it up to see that the twelve bands that are represented in the the credit appear in various dress representing various genres. Interesting fact in case you didn't know, they are all actually members of The Turtles. The Turtles kicks Linkin Park's ass left and right when it comes to versatility. Sorry dude.

Replace it with Naked City and the versatility is still above pretty much everyone else.

Actually Queen is probably the correct answer. Rock, Pop, Metal, Jazz, Blues, Rockabilly, Ragtime, Skiffle, Celtic, Progressive, Anthems, Glam, Gospel, Disco, Opera, Music Hall, and Folk. And they excelled at them all, never sounding artificial or phony.

Except during the times they sounded artificial and phony.

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.
