Nope. Folk music would be traditional music or music that uses a traditional structure (ex. dance music, religious music, pop music). Art music would be music that defies those conventions (ex. classical, jazz, experimental music).

Ok. So you're not using the terms as literal as I would. I see.

It's been a while since I've seen the movie. I thought it was the bar saying it to belushi and akroyd.

I thought Art music was more synonymous with Western Classical music. Jazz includes both dance music (Swing, Big Band) and pop music (Jazz standards). Art music aka Western Classical music demands academic background, while Experimental doesn't necessarily need such a requirement.

I was referring to the contemporary perspective of jazz as high-brow, but yes, earlier styles of jazz like Dixieland and swing would fall in the folk category. Experimental music fits because it aligns with the definition I gave earlier.

They end up at a country bar and are trying to get on stage (don't remember why) and ask what music the bar plays, and the bartender says "Both kinds. Country and Western."

Or at least that's how I remember it.
