I've never seen that movie actually. It was a reference to the fact that those are fundamentally the two categories of music.

Oh. There's a scene where they ask the guy what music they play is. His reply is, "We play both kinds of music, country and western."

Oh. Wouldn't folk still fall under art though?

Oh cause I saw that movie a dozen times, and I was going to say I don't remember that line about art and folk music.

Technically Country and Western allude to two different types of music that was popular back then. Country would be stuff by Ernest Tubb and Western (Swing) would be music by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.

Say if I listed 80 genres, it doesn't mean I listen twice amount of different types of music than you do. I don't think it proves I am more open-minded, or I'm any better a music listener.

I've seen people on the internet say they only listen to ABBA or The Beatles, and in a way I am fascinated by that, not getting tired of hearing the same stuff constantly. I don't think I could restrict myself to one band. However they love ABBA or The Bealtes that much and that's all they want to listen to than all that counts is that they are listening to music they love to hear.

Spoiler for list:

  1. Jump Blues
  2. Western Swing
  3. New Orleans R&B
  4. Rock and Roll
  5. Rockabilly
  6. Instrumental Rock
  7. Surf
  8. Prat Rock
  9. British Invasion
  10. Beat music
  11. Tottenham Sound
  12. Garage Rock
  13. Baroque Rock
  14. Psychedelia
  15. Acid Rock
  16. Progressive Rock
  17. Acid Folk
  18. Folk Rock
  19. Folk-Jazz
  20. Avant-garde Folk
  21. Experimental Rock
  22. Blues Rock
  23. Hard Rock
  24. Detroit Rock
  25. Southern Rock
  26. Pub Rock
  27. Punk Rock
  28. Ant music
  29. New Wave
  30. Mod Revival
  31. NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle)
  32. Ska
  33. Rocksteady
  34. Reggae
  35. Dub
  36. Cold Wave
  37. Minimal Wave
  38. Hardcore Punk
  39. College Rock
  40. Dunedin Sound
  41. post-Hardcore
  42. Noise Rock
  43. Neo-psychedelia
  44. C-86
  45. Gothic Rock
  46. Jangle Pop
  47. Twee pop
  48. Brit Pop
  49. Shoegazing
  50. Dream Pop
  51. Electroclash
  52. Grunge
  53. Alt-Rock
  54. post-Rock
  55. Math Rock
  56. Post-Punk Revival
  57. Jazz
  58. West Coast
  59. Cool Jazz
  60. R&B
  61. Soul
  62. Philadelphia Soul
  63. Champagne Soul
  64. Funk
  65. Country Blues
  66. Piedmont Blues
  67. Delta Blues
  68. Louisiana Blues
  69. Electric Blues
  70. Exotica
  71. Bossa Nova
  72. Boogie-woogie
  73. Swing
  74. Be Bop
  75. Cool Jazz
  76. West Coast Jazz
  77. Appalachian Folk music
  78. American Folk Revival
  79. Bluegrass
  80. Old Timey

This is what I like to listen to, depending on my mood. I left out nonsense genres like proto-Punk, proto-Metal, Yatch Rock, Dad Rock, and Freakfolk, which I really don't listen to. I try to avoid the terms like indie, world music and Freakbeat, which I sometimes listen to. I don't care for the term "Twee" but I listed it anyway.
A lot of those are sub genres. Just say oh Ilike plenty of things, such as jazz, rock, blues, soul, reggae and more. Now you have a starting point, and if none of those genres interest the other dude he can ask for a few more.

But didn't they say that to the redneck who own the Country Western bar? They would be the only two types of music he would listen to, Country music and Western Swing. I think thinking off the cuff, BS-ing him and playing to his close mindedness was the joke.

Nope. Folk music would be traditional music or music that uses a traditional structure (ex. dance music, religious music, pop music). Art music would be music that defies those conventions (ex. classical, jazz, experimental music).
