I hate this answer. Just list some broad favourite genres or some artists to get a conversation going. It doesn't have to be all your many faves, just select a few. It doesn't have to be sub genres, just say broad ones like "I love jazz and blues, sometimes some funk" or some ****. Or list something you've been listening to lately, or stuff you listen to frequently.

I'm open to a ton of different music and have heard songs I like from many different genres but I know I heavily gravitate towards kinds of rock music, particulary punk and metal. I certainly know I don't like everything, and I also certainly know I haven't listened to everything.

Is it so hard to list some preferences? Even if you like a lot of stuff I can't fathom liking everything equally and listening to them in equal frequencies.

Listening to everything in terms of genres is incredibly tough, yet it's usually said by people who barely listen to anything and aren't big music fans.

The answer is a dead end to the convo. I get it if it's actually said by a hardcore music nerd who listens to everything, but in experience it has always been someone who has no clue how big the scope of everythin is.

You have to be able to play an instrument before you can have a proper talk about listening to music?

But at this point most people who really like music are involved in the creation of some version of it

What I mean is I talk about music with the people I jam with but never bring it up around friends (what little I actually have) and co-workers

I very quickly sound like a rambling madman

Oh, see what you mean now. The only person who I can have a decent chat to about music is my older brother and he plays harmonica. I'm music mad and I've been playing flute and fife for 30 years. So maybe you're onto something there :)

Obviously, that doesn't mean that one has heard every album, every artist, etc.--there's too much music in the world for anyone to have heard literally everything.

And I know that a lot of people who aren't big music fans will answer "everything" when you ask them what music they listen to or like.

Also, I have preferences of course.

But I listen to a like a huge variety of music, stuff from every genre, really, maybe with the exception of some genres that are extremely obscure that have only a few artists in them. In those cases, I just don't know about the genre. But I'm familiar with a ton of obscure stuff, too.

I regularly, equally collect music from 39 to 50+ genres depending on how you count them--those are my favorite genres, and I listen to and like plenty of music from plenty other genres aside from those, too. Some of my favorite genres are extremely broad--they have tons of subgenres. I like all of it.

I have thousands of artists in my collection and many thousands of albums. I've yet to run into a genre where I don't like some music that falls under it. I like the vast majority of music I hear at least a bit. There are really no artists I hate. Even the few things that I'm more indifferent towards I regularly listen to if they're in my collection, because almost everything grows on me/I've gone from not caring very much for something to liking it a lot plenty of times in the past. In fact, that almost always happens.

I also don't really have any clear hierarchy of favorites. I tried to make a list of all of my favorite artists one time and it ended up being somewhere around 2000 different artists. If I try to say my "top 100" of those, it ends up being at least a few hundred. I can't narrow it down more. I like a ton of stuff equally. I can't really name favorite albums by particular artists because if I like them, I usually like all of their albums about the same amount. There are a bunch of artists I like with large discographies where I'd give every album a 10/10. It's the same for songs. It's impossible for me to name favorites. I'd have to just randomly list songs. I tend to get into whatever music is playing at the time. My only requirement is variety.

So it's way easier to just say that I listen to/like "everything" when someone asks, because it's pretty accurate--and who wants a list of 50+ genres and thousands of artists?

Yea, I think. Except, I can easily make a top 10 list of my favorite artist. while I do listen to a ton of different music and genres from around the world, my favorites rarely change.

Here's my list of genres that I concentrate on. I put equal emphasis on collecting each category. They're divided up in idiosyncratic ways that reflect my preferences. There's some overlap because of this, and some genres are extremely broad. Each line is a category. The slashes on a line usually mean that I take turns between concentrating on each (so the first time through the list I'll do the leftmost genre on that line, then second time through, the second one on that line, etc.) The genres sharing a line I think of as related in some way, and in a couple cases, it's simply different names that more or less the same stuff is known by.

I like all of these genres equally, and because I collect them per this list, I pretty much listen to them equally, too:

afro cuban jazz
ambient/drone/noise
art pop/sophistipop/zolo
avant prog/RIO/zeuhl
bluegrass
blues
blues rock/boogie rock
broadway/showtunes
bubblegum/teen pop/radio disney artists/top of billboard charts

A lot on that list are just sub-genres, and sub-sub-genres. I get your point but I think a list like that doesn't necessarily means more "different" types of music, it's just more type of related music being listed. Say if I listed 80 genres, it doesn't mean I listen twice amount of different types of music than you do. I don't think it proves I am more open-minded, or I'm any better a music listener.

I've seen people on the internet say they only listen to ABBA or The Beatles, and in a way I am fascinated by that, not getting tired of hearing the same stuff constantly. I don't think I could restrict myself to one band. However they love ABBA or The Bealtes that much and that's all they want to listen to than all that counts is that they are listening to music they love to hear.

Spoiler for list:

  1. Jump Blues

This is what I like to listen to, depending on my mood. I left out nonsense genres like proto-Punk, proto-Metal, Yatch Rock, Dad Rock, and Freakfolk, which I really don't listen to. I try to avoid the terms like indie, world music and Freakbeat, which I sometimes listen to. I don't care for the term "Twee" but I listed it anyway.

I'm going to start telling people I like both types of music: art music and folk music.
