Robert Johnson
Son House
Skip James
Blind Willie McTell

(btw, Howlin' Wolf is 100% Chicago blues, like many a blues man from that generation, he was born in the south and learned to play there, but moved to Chicago and recorded with Chess, there is a signifcant difference in sound.

These are the four that I've spent the most time listening to over the past year, so I'll give them my vote.

R. L. Burnside
John Lee Hooker
Junior Kimbrough
Bukka White

Since there are some people who don't know the difference between Chicago Blues and Delta Blues, or between Piedmont Blues and Delta Blues, I guess it won't matter how I cast my votes.
  1. Mississippi Blind Willie McTell
  2. Mississippi Mississippi John Hurt
  3. Mississippi Elizabeth Cotten
  4. Mississippi Reverend Gary Davis

Imagine if we were doing metal or "club/dance music" subgenres. I don't know what the fnck the differences are between most of those, and I don't really care. It's not that I don't like metal or "club/dance" music (I still call all of the latter "disco" by the way), but there's such a crapload of subgenres, with such fine-grained, often ridiculous distinctions between them . . .

Still for purposes of a thread like this, I'd use Wikipedia for a guide re who to choose from, just to enable a wider variety of polls/answers. But looking at Wikipedia, I'd have no idea if a listed artist is "really Metalcore" or "really EuroHouse" or whatever. I'd just look at who they have listed and pick the ones I like the most.

With "delta blues" I have a better handle on the conventional distinction, but it's still not a distinction I employ for personal use. Pretty much blues is just blues for me for personal use. I'm not a fan of narrow genre distinctions, because I think it tends to lead to narrow thinking. Typically the music I like best blurs lots of genre lines, melds a bunch of different things together, etc.

I'll say it again. Wikipedia is pretty bad with genres. I'd recommend going to music-specific sites for ideas.

Btw, I went everywhere around the internet but Elizabeth Cotten isn't eligible. Neapolisher, if you can find me a source that claims she's delta blues, I'll include your "vote."

Also, I will now look for a blues artist called I.C. Wiener.

I'd have to care about it though. I think people get ridiculous with genre classifications, and part of how they get ridiculous is by being uptight about classifications being "right" or "wrong," "accurate" or "inaccurate," etc.

Y'know, instead of making fun of people's votes, it's usually good to give information about a genre you know about so that other people can learn. But instead, you do as you always do, you make pointless retorts and you assume people will take you seriously.

Well, the way I've always viewed genres is more like this, "I really like this band. What are some other bands." At that point you can be like we'll they're this genre.

So what I'm saying, is by classifying the bands, you can classify the band and easily find more similar bands to enjoy thanks to this classification.
