Female singers in rock bands

does this annoy any of you? im not sexist, unless me hating when girls sing in a rock band is sexist. then sign me up for sexist-anon

Trauma 07-28-2005 01:56 PM

Yes that does sound very sexist.
You offend me, Gentleman Johnny.
There are loads of great female rock vocalists!

ArtistInTheAmbulance 07-28-2005 01:56 PM

Most of the time. I know its harsh, its nothing sexist really, its just that a lot of the female vocalists Ive heard dont have such a good impact on a band. Its just not the same sometimes, harsh, but whatever. My opinion.

like janis joplin? ya i know. but like current bands, such as the distillers, yeah yeah yeahs, etc

Trauma 07-28-2005 02:03 PM

Well it just has a different sound, that's all.
I mean 5.6.7.8.'s fit into that category as well but they just have a different vibe.
You wouldn't see a big huge man with a deep voice singing, "Woo-hoo, hoo hoo hoo, woo-hoo, hoo hoo hoo."
I myself couldn't picture a woman singing for INXS but they have women trying out too in that new television program...
It's just a different feel I guess, and you either like most of it or you don't.

hookers with machineguns 07-28-2005 02:21 PM

It doesn't sound sexist, it just sounds like you don't listen to that much music.

Personally, MOST of my favorite artists are females, and MANY of my favorite bands include female vocalists. Try listening to new music sometimes people.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 07-28-2005 02:25 PM

Its not that Im refusing to listen to bands because they have a female vocalist in them. Theres just not many Ive come across that appeal to me as much as male vocalists. If it bugs you, feel free to reccomend some, and Ill be sure to look into em.

hookers with machineguns 07-28-2005 02:34 PM

No, it doesn't bug me at all. If you SERIOUSLY want recommendations (which would purely be based on my personal preference), then try reading some of my posts. I swear I've responded to this same exact topic at least five times in the past 3 months.

sleepy jack 07-28-2005 02:37 PM

ERIKA AND JEN *touches self*

i hate that one pic though...

gotbacktheplague 07-31-2005 06:30 AM

Most of the time any band with a female singer will be known for her only. But that's just because most of one's focus in a rock song goes to the words. Rock and roll is so sexual, and the female voice is generally very sexy. Listen to "Wilderness" by Sleater-Kinney, and you'll hear an example. The Pretenders obviously come to mind, but Chrissie Hynde was the main songwriter, too. In my opinion the best female rock singers are those whose voices ooze sexuality... like Janis, Patti Smith, Ann Wilson, etc. But that's what rock is all about, nasty sex. There's just something so hot about a woman getting up there and screaming. Oof.

BTW - Don't say it's sexist to think this way... not all of Robert Plant's appeal to the ladies was his voice (nods towards croch).

If anyone thinks I'm sexist, I'm gonna' go listen to "I'll Stand By You" by the Pretenders and cry.

:sad emoticon:

Josephine 07-31-2005 11:21 AM

I myself, the girl, have to confess that I can't take serious the most rockbands with female leadsingers. Or rather: I just don't listen to them.
Like No Doubt or something like that...(Is No Doubt ROCK??? No. Not really... You see my point?)
There are a few female singers I like, but they're soloartists like PJ Harvey or Melissa auf der Maur.

The Indie Bar Kid 08-01-2005 05:11 PM

Rock bands are predominantly male, so i think its just more out of lack of choice than quality. But I adore PJ Harvey (adore as in "obsess about"), and Charlotte Hatherley (adore as in *explodes in joy*), but almost all women exploit their sexuality in music, e.g the Subways (quote: "I only wear mini-skirts all the time for ventilation, hee hee"). But you have bands like Von Bondies and White Stripes (i know i know they shouldnt be that close together what with the restraining order and all) and Autolux where the women aren't distinguished as an opposite sex, but just as much a part of the band, and that works well.

Ha ha and anybody remember "Bitch Alert!!!!"...Priceless band!

I spent the last 15 minutes compiling some good artists and good bands that include female vocals to further prove my original point:
Blondie, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Portishead, Doreen Shaffer, Metric, Dry and Heavy, Bessie Smith, Tilly and the Will, Natacha Atlas, New Pornographers, Vice Squad, Veruca Salt, X, Deerhoof, Mercury Rev, Tori Amos, The Slits, Fiery Furnaces, Ladytron, Wolfbrigade, Magneta Lane, The No No's, Frou Frou, Architecture in Helsinki, Figurine, Freezepop, Call and Response, The Pixies, The Breeders, Fugu, Magnetic Fields, Cibo Matto, Hang on the Box, The Raincoats, Cowboy Junkies, The Evens, The Rondelles, Meet the Virus, Le Tigre, Bikini Kill, Julie Ruin, The Runaways, Melt Banana, F-Minus, Sonic Youth, Peaches, The Avengers, Nausea, The Devotchkas, Witch Hunt, Katie Melua, KMFDM, Antischism, .f*ckingcom, old Sneaker Pimps, Mirah, Elysian Fields, Bratmobile, Rilo Kiley, The Alley Cats, Blatz, The Crabs, Saraha Hotnights. (if you know any of these bands and like them, then clap your hands)

Yeah, I totally forgot bout her... She's cool. I like her as a member of "Ash" and as a soloartist.

The Indie Bar Kid 08-02-2005 11:46 AM

Yes yes, thats why I like her...Her musical prowess...

Ah no really I do think shes quite the talent, but she did dilute Ash slightly.

judas_priest 08-02-2005 11:59 AM

I myself am a girl and don't listen to any bands with female singers. I personally don't like the sound of their voices as much, and think they aren't well-suited to heavy rock and metal music.

Yeah, probably... I guess she was too good for the band. That's the problem with girls in a male rockband...

The Indie Bar Kid 08-02-2005 12:54 PM

Kim Deal, for instance...Always preferred the Breeders to Pixies

I agree with your point some women exploit their sexuality, but Charlotte Cooper did say in an interview "I dance around a lot and find them easy to move in." about her mini skirts.

Yeah but that's just something whores say.

The Indie Bar Kid 08-03-2005 06:55 PM

It would probably be easier for her to go fully naked at that rate then...

Well they need summat to backup their stage show when it finally starts to sink in that they're a piece of Sh it band. But for now we'll just have to be content with standing in the front row

In the words of the Subways: Oh Yeah.

(and probably more that I can't think of right now)

The Indie Bar Kid 08-03-2005 07:11 PM

No Dresden Dolls though....

Lets get some Girl Anachronism

JeEeN1305 08-03-2005 07:17 PM

Why, I mean. look at the donnas. a whole rock band OF girls. only. and Amy Lee, from evan essance. Im totaly down with girl singers in heavy rock and metal. i think it shows the guys that girls can do it to.

MORESOAD4ME 08-03-2005 08:24 PM

i think Tsunami Bomb and Letters to Cleo are pretty good

JeEeN1305 08-04-2005 01:35 AM

Yes. very sexist...Why do you dislike it?

<<<>>> 08-09-2005 11:24 AM

I would the living 5hit out of Brody from the Distillers. Siouxie from Siouxie and The Banshees has a voice I'd like to but not quite the face and body.
